Friday just wasn't a good day to try to rob a westside ice cream store.
First, the robbers tried to use a toy gun, but the clerk spotted the ruse right away. Then, when one of the robbers reached into the cash register, the clerk closed the register drawer on his hand.
The duo left with bruised egos and probably a bruised hand.
More importantly, they left empty-handed, and police now have three suspects in custody.
Here's how it happened:
According to Flagstaff police accounts, two men walked into the Baskin-Robbins store at 1104 S. Milton Road, at about 11:30 a.m. One of the men had a gun that the clerk believed to be a toy.
One of the suspects reached into the cash register, but the clerk closed the register on the would-be robber's hand. Police said the man was unable to get any money before the two men fled the scene south in the direction of Picazzo's Pizza.
According to information from the police department, a woman driver was believed to be involved with the two men. Police began searching for a silver Kia with an Arizona license plate.
Sgt. Tom Boughner of the police department said the suspects were caught Friday afternoon, and detectives have seized a vehicle matching the description of the Kia.
Arrested and booked into the county jail on aggravated armed robbery charges were: Conal Smith, 22; Holly Dornan, 21; and Jason McPhetridge, 21.
The investigation continues.
