Authorities say a 65-year-old man has been shot to death and a sheriff's deputy injured after an hour-long standoff near an elementary school in north Georgia.
The school, Lula Elementary, was locked down after a witness saw
a man with a handgun walking on a street that runs behind the
school. Police say an off-duty officer was called to the scene, and
the man pointed a gun at him and fled. They say the man then
barricaded himself inside his home and a SWAT team was sent to the
scene, and that shot were fired.
Authorities say the man, identified as Herbert Tate, died from a
gunshot wound shortly after arriving at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
The injured deputy was not identified. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with a gunshot wound in his arm.

Police say the suspect then barricaded himself inside his RV camper a few blocks from the school. Police say "several'' shots were fired.
Authorities don't believe the man intended to harm the school.

The Lula Elementary School was locked down on Monday after a
witness saw a man with a gun nearby. The man later barricaded himself inside a camper near the school.
Hall County Sgt. Kiley Sargent told The Times of Gainesville that the deputy was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The suspect also was being transported an area hospital. His condition was not known.
Sargent says authorities do not believe the man intended to harm the school but put the school on lockdown as a precaution.
School officials did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The school year began in Hall County on Thursday.

Hall County Sergeant Kiley Sargent told The Times of Gainesville that the officer was injured in a gun fight shortly before noon. He said the injuries are not life-threatening.
Sargent says the man has been contained inside a camper trailer near Lula Elementary School. He says investigators do not believe the man intended to harm the school and that the lock down is a precaution.
Police are not releasing the man's identity.
Hall County Sheriff's officials did not immediately return a call for comment from The Associated Press.
The school year began in Hall County on Thursday.
