Former Savannah policeman shot during standoff

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Former Savannah-Chatham Metro police officer, Joe Groover, is recovering after being shot during a standoff in Hall County. Groover is now a member of the SWAT team in Hall County.
Yesterday Groover and other officers responded to an elementary school in Lula, Georgia. Police said 65-year-old Herbert Tate barricaded himself inside a camper after witnesses reported seeing him walking with a handgun near the school. The SWAT team surrounded the building. Shots were fired and Officer Groover was hit in the arm.
Paramedics rushed Groover to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where he underwent surgery. He's recovering in the Intensive Care Unit today. As for the shooter, Herbert Tate, he died in the gunfight.
Officer Groover worked with the SCMPD K-9 unit with his dog Nero in Savannah for five years. He left the department in February 2006.
