I think that is key, like the artical mentioned, the attacker is expecting you to comply. If you explode on them, you can gain the tactical advantage using the tool that they planned to use on you. Situtations like that one is where extra training in self defense can really come into play. There are plenty of techniques that can be used to disarm someone and with some learning and practice, they can be used sucessfully.
After reading the article, one thing pops out at me. The BG got in the house and none of the 3 dogs ever barked or alerted? I dont know what breeds they are, but it seems like the BG had definitely been at their house before and acquainted himself with the dogs. About fighting back, three things come to mind: Speed, surprise and violence of action, A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed tomorrow and someday someone may kill you with your own gun but they should have to beat you with it because its empty.
From what I gathered...they were taking a break for some afternoon lovin'.
A. Make sure you lock your doors before you get nekkid.
B. Make sure you still have a firearm handy.
C. Make sure your woman will swing for the fences if you are holding down a BG and telling her to smack him in the grape.

Good article explaining the proper mindset and good example where hesitation and indecisiveness caused some problems.
You should be aware that while you try to fight back, if you are indecisive or hesitate and fail to utilize surprise and immediate violence of action, you stand a good chance of losing the battle.
The tables could have easily been turned because of her poor batting ability if the intruder had managed to get a hold of his knife or gun again.
First thing my wife said was that the woman should have hit him in the dome the way Robert DeNiro (as Al Capone) did to the fellow gangster at the round table meeting in the movie "The Untouchables!"
