The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office reports the 10-hour standoff ended around 11:30 p.m. late Sunday on Winter Garden St. in Port Charlotte. 46 year old Thomas Edward Dickie was found deceased in a bathroom in his home.
A relative contacted the CCSO at 1:08 p.m. Sunday saying the man was intoxicated, irrrational, suicidal, and had a lot of weapons in the home. She wanted deputies to check on his well being. When deputies arrived to check on the man, as they approached, a barrage of bullets came out of the home hitting and entering a home across the street. It is estimated four dozen or more bullets may have been fired. No one was injured. Homes were evacuated and those in a two block area were told to stay in their homes.
CCSO deputies, detectives, K-9, aviation, crisis negotiators, assisted by the Charlotte County SWAT team, Lee County Sheriff's Office SWAT and Bomb Squad teams, set up in the area. SWAT team members surrounded the home taking every precaution for the safety of everyone.
Continual announcements were made to the man in the home throughout the day to give him self up. Crisis negotiators talked to the man but his cell phone eventually went dead and there was no further contact. Around 11:00 p.m. the LCSO armored vehicle moved in and smashed in the front door. They then sent in their special robot to do surveilance of the rooms and the robot finally located the man deceased in the bathroom. The Charlotte County SWAT team then moved into the home, secured it and turned it over to CCSO Major Crimes Detectives and Crime Scene. Detectives have not said how the man apparently killed himself.
Around midnight, the CCSO made announcements in the area and through the media that those residents who were not allowed to go to their home during the standoff could now do so as the area was secure. CCSO Major Crimes detetives have not released the man's name, pending notification of family. The body was transported to the County Medical Examiner's Office in Murdock for an autopsy.
A lady I work with is the wife to one of the SWAT members. She said that they guy was arrested last month for DUI with his 13yo son in the car. I hear he shot the neighbors house over 20 times.
Gun control can be blamed in part for allowing 9/11 to happen.

The sad state that some people get into can normally be attributed to some form of abuse in childhood. That, of course, does not excuse this type of behavior but kids from happy homes normally turn out to be pretty balanced adults. Its really sad.

Well at least this guy saved the taxpayers a ton of funds...if he chose to end his life
, great...better himself than a bunch of other innocent individuals, and then himself (which is often the case).
Glad no one else was injured.
