ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ― Flowers, candles and balloons are being placed on the grass outside the home of a 20-year-old Anaheim man who was mistakenly shot and killed by police.
Julian Alexander heard commotion outside his home at about 1:30 Tuesday morning.
He grabbed a broomstick and stepped onto his front yard to protect his pregnant wife and mother from what he thought might be burglars.
Anaheim Police Chief John Welter says an officer mistook Alexander for a suspect and shot him twice in the chest.
Alexander died at a hospital.
Welter says the officer was chasing four juveniles suspected of burglary when he ran into Alexander.
Welter called the death a "tragic situation" but says he's withholding judgment on the officer's actions until the investigation is complete.
