    STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Acting on a tip to the NYPD hotline, police say they have collared the man who eluded capture after raping a woman in Mariners Harbor over the weekend.

The suspect, 23-year-old Thomas Fields of the 100 block of Van Pelt Avenue, was picked up just before midnight Wednesday, according to police.

The victim picked Fields -- a convicted serial rapist -- out of a lineup yesterday afternoon, authorities said.

Sources told the Advance the woman fought back during the rape by jabbing her iPod charger into Fields' neck. He still bore two prong marks on the neck from the charger, the sources said.

Fields, who was convicted of rape as a juvenile in 2001, has been out on parole since Nov. 20, 2007.

He committed two rapes when he was 15 years old, and police suspected him in other sexual assaults.

In one instance, he broke into a young woman's apartment in Mariners Harbor, raped her at gunpoint, then slashed her back and shoulder and stole her purse.

In another, Fields followed a young woman off a bus in New Brighton, pulled a knife on her and forced her into bushes near the Consolidated Edison substation at Franklin Avenue off Richmond Terrace, where he ordered her to disrobe and raped her.

When she put her clothes back on, he ordered her to disrobe again, and sodomized her. Fields then cut the woman's forearm, snatched her purse and ran off. Although he told his latest victim he had a gun and a knife, it's not clear if he cut her, law enforcement sources said.

The latest incident occurred at about 2 a.m. last Friday -- authorities say he approached an 18-year-old as she was walking home from a friend's place, made a pretense of asking for directions, then put her in a chokehold and pulled her behind a church at the corner of Brabant Street and Harbor Road.

Police initially categorized the crime as attempted rape, but yesterday they said it was a rape.

A neighbor heard the woman's screams and called 911. When police arrived and interrupted him, Fields told the officers, "It's cool. She's my girl," according to a law enforcement source.

It not clear how he eluded capture, but a witness told the Advance Wednesday that he saw the suspect run out of the fenced-in area where he had dragged the woman, then along Brabant, with officers in pursuit.

He left behind a yellow jacket emblazoned with the cartoon face of Sylvester the Cat, cops said.

Police have charged Fields with first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act -- a crime once classified as sodomy.

He has not been formally charged by prosecutors, according to William J. Smith, a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.

In respect of the past cases, although Fields was charged as an adult, legally he had to be sentenced as a juvenile offender, Smith said, and the maximum applicable sentence was three and one-third to 10 years in prison.

According to the state's sex offender registry Web site, Fields was released on several conditions: He's prohibited from consuming alcohol or going to bars, is to abide by a curfew and is required to attend a sex offender treatment program and take regular polygraph tests.

He also must submit to drug and alcohol tests, and is prohibited from taking sexual enhancement drugs.

Fields' next-door neighbors on Van Pelt Avenue said they were disturbed to learn that a convicted rapist was so near.

"It's sad to know," said Nilka Salazar, as her 4-year-old granddaughter played inside. "I have an older granddaughter; they're frequently here. ... I have a 23-year-old daughter."

Her husband, James, said the neighborhood has changed in the 33 years the family has lived there, and he has had to contend with recent drug activity up the block.

"You've given me one more thing to worry about," he lamented.

Note: Although she was unsuccessful in fighting off the attacker and only marked him, this story does reinforce the concept that literally EVERYTHING and anything is a weapon.
Sadly she stabbed in the neck rather than a place more significant such as in an eye toward trying to stop his actions. An average human neck is much thicker in musculature than what an electric plug could do harm to.
Even still survival instinct and everything is a weapon, period.

Good for her, fighting back and leaving evidence to be used against him later. If you can't get out of the trouble try to make it easier to catch them later.

Just count the days until he strikes again

What he needs is some abrupt lead treatment, followed by a permanent dirt nap.

Good for her. I hope that she is able to recover from the incident.

He will get to be the object of desire when he gets to the big house. I am sure they will give him plenty of his own medicine.
Just remember that shot placement is much more important with what you carry than how big a bang you get with each trigger pull.

This guy needs to take a dirt nap. Let's see him get paroled from that one.

I'm sure there will be an article where his parents talk about what a "good boy" he is. How he goes to church 4 times a week and helps little old ladies cross the street. How he is misunderstood and being persecuted for a mistake he made when he was younger.

Hope he rots in hell, and it happens very soon.

Hopefully next time, (and I'm sure there will be one with this dirt ball) his victim will be armed with more than an iPod charger and the identifying marks left behind will be entry and exit wounds to the chest and forehead.

    I'm disgusted twice:
    1) At this punk
    2) At the legal establishment that only wants to play patty-cake with him

Somewhere, somehow, let justice be done. Doesn't sound like it will be at the hands of the legal system.

Staple his business to a tree stump and push him over backwards.

This dirtbag does not deserve to be using up any more O2...

Too bad his first victim didn't have the 'lead pusher' to put him out of business long ago...at age 15.
