He has no proficiency with firearms.
He's established that as being fact by his actions and statements of normalcy for him and his household.

IMHO he should receive a life sentence.

This guy broke practically every handgun safety rule I preach to my kids and anyone willing to listen... That said, I imagine that once the alcohol wore off, this father is going through his own personal hell. He deserves whatever the jury hands him. My prayers to the mother and the rest of the family on their loss.

I took note of the article pointing out he had a CCW license and multple weapons that his kids always handled...and another accidental discharge of a shotgun. Seems he had a problem keeping his finger off the trigger. I also take note that he said he was very proficient in weapons...that leads me to believe his proficency led to complacency. Hope he spends many years in prison.

Very sad, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. A real tragedy that should have been avoided.

Unfortunately, the bullet hit the wrong target. Sad all the way around. Prayers go out to the family

I have enough problems without adding alcohol into the mix. I don't drink. If I do something stupid - I can only blame myself and not use drinking as an excuse.

I hate this for that family and for all the bad press it lends to the anti's...

very sad, and very stupid. He had even accidentally fired a shotgun before too....he clearly shouldn't be allowed to own/handle firearms.

    No winners here...
This was very avoidable, 'liquid stupid' almost always makes situations worse.
A very sad time for an extended family.

So, so sad. Tragic event that was so easily preventable.
And agreed, this gives so much "I told you so" for the antis.

I took a few moments, after hearing of this, to once again revisit gun safety rules with my two kids. It's all about how you educate your children and the example you set by walking the talk!

I feel this guy should spend the rest of his days sitting and thinking about how his irresponsible actions landed him in a 10x12 prison cell !!!

Just a thought or two on how the NRA could use this in memory of the child... do MORE in-school and public seminars on "Responsible Gun Ownership."
I know the NRA is very active in public education and safety, but we need MORE VISIBILITY in the public eye to demonstrate there ARE those who do things the right way.
Case in point with this tragedy... guns do not kill, PEOPLE DO !!! This guy made horrible choices as a gun owner and a father !!! His ignorance led to this, not the gun.
    NRA... get MORE active !!!!!!!

I really feel bad for the girl, it wasn't her fault that her father was a complete idiot..... but she paid the ultimate price. I have NO sympathy for the father what-so-ever and hope he gets everything they can throw at him.

Two things that can never be taken back:

Words after they've left your mouth.

A bullet after it's left your gun.

A wise man remembers this at all times. Those who don't live with regret.

I feel really bad for the dad, because he's got to life the rest of his life knowing that his own lack of wisdom cost his own daughter her life. That's going to be really, really hard to come to grips with.

    Pretty bad. Completely avoidable.

It's interesting how important the basic safety rules are.

Even if you put your finger on the trigger, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction helps cover you.

Even if you don't religiously keep track of a gun's condition between shooting sessions, religiously unloading it and making it safe prior to end of the session is the safety net for that.

Even if you clean guns while drunk, keeping the cleaning area devoid of ammo is your backstop.

But when you drink, fail to clear the gun, fail to maintain muzzle control, AND diddle your finger on the trigger ... well, it's hard to avoid spraying bullets.

    *sigh*

I wonder if it would be too harsh to have 2 pictures in his cell. 1 picture of a bottle and 1 picture of the girl?

Life comes down to choices. He chose, and he ends up with a dead child. If he cares anything for the child, I believe he'll have those two "pictures" in his head for the rest of his life.
