Suspect shot in attempted robbery at Port Alberni jewelry store survives
By Wawmeesh G. Hamilton - Alberni Valley News

The suspect shot in yesterday's brazen daylight robbery attempt survived his injuries, and police are investigating the incident on several fronts, a police official said.

"The suspect is in stable condition in Victoria General Hosptial," said Staff Sgt. Lee Omilusik.

Police have tentatively identified the suspect but aren't releasing a name.
"He's not from the Alberni Valley from what we can gather," Omilusik said.

An RCMP firearms expert will be at the store tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 24) to analyze the shots fired in the robbery attempt, Omilusik said.

Police are also analyzing footage from the store's surveillance video to determione what happened, and to identify the second suspect involved in the incident, who fled the scene in a car, police said.

In a related development, police are examining a car found on the Alberni Highway that may have been used in the incident.

"It's a car that was reported stolen earlier in the day, and we're going to do some forensic analysis to see whether it's tied into this or not," Omilusik said.

On Wednesday, two men - one armed with a handgun - entered Dievert's Jewelers in Alberni at approximately 4:45 p.m.

One suspect pointed the handgun at the store clerk while they attempted to rob the store.

But some sort of confrontation ensued between the suspects and the store owner, and one of the suspects was shot. He was taken to West Coast General Hospital, then flown by air ambulance to Victoria General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

The store remained closed and behind yellow police tape on Thursday. The police team inside was doing a crime scene analysis, Omilusik said.

The attempted armed robbery is the second incident to occur at Dieverts this year.

In May, a suspect stole a diamond ring from the store.

Anyone with any information about the latest incident is asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Lets hope the store owner shot the BG with his own gun. If the owner had a handgun he's in deep doodoo.

What a load of toro feces!

Is this the new concealed carry law in Canada? If you need a weapon for self-defense, you must take it away from an 'armed dirtbag'?

Aren't there enough sheepdogs in Canada to gain any self-defense rights back?

Welcome to our world. That's why guys like Colin and myself are so vocal. We would love to have the rights so many of our neighbours to the south take for granted.

What would really be da icing on the cake is if they charge the store owner with any kind of crime

Apparently the store owner had his gun licensed to his store, so he is legal on that part, his lawyer has told him not to comment on the situation, until the Crown Prosecutors decide to charge him or declare it an act of self defence. There is a not so small army of gun owners ready to bombard the press and the government with letters if they try to press charges without good reason. If this is declared a justified self-defence shooting, it will help our cause a great deal. Apparently the town council is 100% behind him on this.
