what a horrible story. I wonder what the circumstances were surrounding the shooting?

What the hell? What a homecoming to survive that long on the streets of Iraq but then got shot on a street in Alaska.
Sad.
By the title I thought "Vet" was meaning veterinarian.

It's too bad that soldiers assigned to USARAK are prohibited from carrying a concealed weapon except out in the boonies.

It certainly did create a significant risk for Sgt. Minnear for not being allowed to do so, I wonder how Major General Layfield feels about his "policy" now that one of his combat troops was killed because he didn't have the necessary firepower at his disposal to defend himself against the enemy...or does he feel that it was a justifiable sacrifice?Carrying concealed deadly weapons by USARAK Soldiers represents a significant risk to the safety
and welfare of this command.
The first time you aren't armed and prepared may be the last time you wished you were.
That kind of reminds me of a man a few years ago who came back from Iraq or Afghanistan, managed to survive war, but died after hitting a moose. Yes even in Alaska we have our share of bad people, and not so smart animals.

What kind of bogus policy is this for a man in the military to issue? A risk to the command? What could he possibly be talking about? I guess somebody this lame could be worried about somebody putting him out of their misery. Does he also prohibit driving, smoking, drinking, consorting with loose women and extreme sports?
But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself...
