3 car thief suspects arrested after chase
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
ST. LOUIS -- An off-duty St. Louis police officer fired a shot at one of three teens late last night who tried to break into his car, but the teen wasn't hit, police say.
The incident happened shortly before midnight Tuesday in the 3200 block of January Avenue, near Hampton Avenue and Arsenal Street. The 23-year-old off-duty officer told investigators that he saw the teens trying to break into his 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix. He confronted them and they ran.
As the off-duty officer ran after them, one of the teens turned and pointed a handgun at him. That's when the off-duty officer fired a shot but missed.
The three teens jumped into a stolen Dodge van and took off.
Police patrolling the area spotted the van and tried to pull it over. It sped away, eventually going east on Interstate 44. At times, the chase topped speeds of 80 miles an hour.
The car chase ended about nine miles from where it started. The Dodge van crashed at 10th Street and St. Louis Avenue.
One of the suspects, 19, hurt his knee in the crash and was caught near the crash scene. A second suspect, 18, was arrested in the 900 block of Montgomery Street with the help of a police dog that bit him. The third suspect, 16, was caught two blocks away in the 1100 block of Montgomery.
A police officer who scuffled with the youths during the arrest was treated at a local hospital for injuries to his hand and shoulder, police say.
The teens were arrested for flourishing a weapon, stealing and attempted stealing. The youngest was turned over to juvenile authorities.
