BAD: HPD Officer Shot During Traffic Stop - Houston, TX

HPD Officer Shot During Traffic Stop

HOUSTON -- A Houston police officer was shot in the head during a traffic stop on Sunday morning, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said the officer stopped a driver in the 5800 block of Sunforest near West Tidwell Road at about 8:45 a.m.

Detectives said someone in the car shot the officer. Police have not said how many people were in the car.

The officer was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

Police went to a home in northwest Harris County and arrested a man in connection with the shooting. His name was not released.
The officer did not survive. Terrible news especially during the holiday season.

I'm surprised the suspect was taken without incident. There's been a big increase in crime here since Katrina.

You kill a cop in Texas and you get put in the express lane to death row,I'm surprised he wasn't shot resisting arrest, the cowards will kill a cop when they can surprise them but when they are up against the SWAT team they decide to take their chances in court

I'm curious how and when it happen. If it was on the approach or when he was starting to commence the pull-over routine.

I ask, b/c LEO's here will never approach further than the back door, which would make shooting hard to do for the driver.

Like TX, VA does have the death penalty and are not afraid to use it. We rank 2nd behind TX in number of executions since death penalty was reinstated in 1976, and actually surpass them in number of executions per capita.

We seek justice for the worst here in FL, too!

FL used to have extremely high electric bills...then they started the injection method to fight crime...

    UPDATE:
HPD Officer Shot, Killed In Line Of Duty - Houston News Story - KPRC Houston
"Keep the family in your prayers," Houston Mayor Bill White said. "We're so lucky to have people who risk their lives for us."

Houston police said the officer stopped a driver in the 5800 block of Sunforest Drive near West Tidwell Road at about 8:45 a.m.

Detectives said the driver got out of his car and ran though a nearby apartment complex. Police said the driver ran around a corner and hid behind a bin.

When the officer came around the corner, the driver shot the officer multiple times, investigators said.

The situation unfolded so quickly that police did not know that the officer had been shot until residents called 911, officials said. He did not have a chance to call for help, investigators said.

"I was telling a 911 operator, 'Officer down, officer down,'" resident Willie Fleming said. "To think of this officer, chasing someone, and not even having the time to think goodbye children, goodbye anything."

The officer was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital and died a short time later. His name has not been released. Police said he had been with the department for 11 years. He was working an extra shift to help combat the high crime rate in the area.

"It makes me sad to know that it was of our officers that protected us," Marie Steele said.

Before the officer chased the driver, he entered the driver's license plate number into the computer in his patrol car, which led police to the driver.

"The officers, when they responded to the scene, they noticed the last vehicle that he had pulled over matched the partial plate that the citizen had given us to the plate that was in his computer," Capt. Bruce Williams said.

Police went to a home in northwest Harris County and arrested a man in connection with the shooting. His name was not released.

Investigators said they have not found the gun used to kill the officer.

We have zero tolerance for weapons in school (pepper spray, pocket knives, screw drivers, scissors) yet some guy shoots a cop and an on the spot firing line is out of the question.

Sorry, but stuff like this really gets me riled up. The guy was working extra shifts to make christmas money or otherwise pad his pocket....Oh wait, no he wasn't. This guy was a real LEO! He was just working extra shifts to put bad guys behind bars. He probably leaves 1-4 cute little now fatherless kids at home too.
