The good news is that some of these guns probably have the chance of getting stolen and out on the street in the hands of people who are not law abiding citizens. Although, it makes most of us want to puke, one has to see a little bit of a silver lining here.

This is complete crap - certainly if I needed money I would not "turn-in" my weapon to the Sheriff's dept. I would sell it legitimately and make 5-6 times what the city is giving. Furthermore, annonymous turn-in of assault rifles I am a little weary of. Seems like a fallacy to me.

I am reminded of the now several years old Chris Rock spoof commercial "Knives for Guns" every time I hear about these silly turn in schemes. While I imagine Rock to be anti, I think that people thinking along the same lines as me really see the Money for Guns to be just as silly. Go ahead and YouTube it- I'm sure you'll laugh.

I worked security for a guard dog company in Compton back in the 70s, after I got out of the service. After the first night at an apartment complex with thefts, assaults, burglaries, etc., I gave that job up. We weren't allowed firearms and I didn't need the job that bad.

Compton was a sh..hole back then and I guess it still is.

Just one question: how MANY of the 590 guns were STOLEN ? Stolen guns are $50 per on the corner here in North San Diego County......I see a "double your money" scheme appearing here. (Oops, maybe I wasn't supposed to know that.)

IMHO, more burglers who have found the state to be the best possible "fencing operation". Crime does indeed pay.

I had the exact same thought - just go down to Cabelas or Bass Pro and buy up all the Red Ryder BB guns - then head down to the giveaway to pick up the gift cards.

What a great idea! But I bet most of the guns turned in where not worth the $100.

They have one of these going on this Saturday at a nearby city (Lakeland, FL). Will be interesting to see how many they get. Same deal $50 gift cards for a gun turned in. No questions asked.

Regarding the $50 gift vs the true value of the gun, I doubt that custom 1911's, SiGs, HKs, classic revolvers, etc are being traded in (unless they're stolen).

Though, I wouldn't be surprised if some Glocks are being turned in, as that seems to be the gang weapon of choice due to it's prominence in music and movies.

Mental note...pick up crappy Jennings at next gun show and make some quick ammo money. Didn't Seattle lose like 60 thousand on one of these things not too long ago?
