WEST PARK - A man stole a hearse -- during the actual funeral service -- around noon Wednesday, then led deputies on a brief chase through West Park before being shot by an unknown deputy.
Yes, you read that right, at least according to a spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's investigators are still gathering facts and the suspect was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. The extent of his injuries are not yet known.
According to the Sheriff's Office:
Mourners were inside a church at the 5200 block of Pembroke Road when someone jumped into the waiting hearse outside and took off. The corpse was not inside the vehicle.
The Sheriff's Office was notified and immediately issued an emergency bulletin to be on the lookout for the hearse. It didn't take long to find the long, black car during high noon, and the chase didn't last long either.
Sheriff spokesman Jim Leljedal did not release names of the suspect or the deputy, and officers are expected to be on the scene for hours. More details will be released later, he said.
