A police officer shot a fleeing suspect in the shoulder early today during a foot chase that began with a routine traffic stop, police said.
The chase began about 2:40 a.m. after the officer pulled over a car in the 4600 block of West Tidwell, Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said.
The officer and his partner were taking the vehicle's three occupants into custody when one man broke loose and took off, Senties said. The officer, he said, chased the man down Tidwell and shot him after he reached into his waistband and turned around in an aggressive manner.
The man was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital and was expected to survive, Senties said. His identity was not released.
Senties said he did not know why the officers pulled the car over or why the suspects were being arrested. He also did not know whether the suspect who was shot actually had a weapon or what charges he may face.
As is customary in all officer-involved shootings, the case will be investigated by the HPD homicide division, internal affairs division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
