Phila. man shot because family talked during movie

    By Barbara Boyer

    INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
A South Philadelphia man enraged because a father and son were talking during a Christmas showing of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took care of the situation when he pulled a .380-caliber gun and shot the father, police said.

James Joseph Cialella Jr., 29, of the 1900 block of Hollywood Street is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons violations.

"It's truly frightening when you see something like this evolve into such violence," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Police were called to the Riverview Theatre in the 1400 block of Columbus Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. where the gunshot victim, a Philadelphia man who was not identified, told police a man sitting near him told his family to be quiet and threw popcorn at his son.

After exchanging words, Vanore said Cialella allegedly got out of his seat to confront the family when the father got up to protect them. That's when the victim was shot once in the left arm, sending others in the theatre running to safety.

Cialella then sat down to watch the movie. Police arrived a short time later and arrested Cialella and confiscated his weapon, Vanore said.
Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives.

That's the closing line for the Prosecutor. Well done Mr. Cialella.

What a complete idiot. Shot a man and then sat back down to watch the movie? Geez!

Philly has tried to ban CCW but pre-emption technically prevents that.

However - I hope like crazy the idiot was not legally carrying - that certainly would throw poop on our cause, even more.

Another good reason to always carry. Just wish the laws allowed more carry rights in NC then we currently have!!

I never go to theaters 'cause I really hate folks yapping during a movie. Rude rude rude. Wouldn't shoot them tho, even if it's deserved. Just bad form.......

If this is an accurate reporting of reality, it is obviously an example of where the Brady-ites/anti-gunners/anti-2Aers are totally right.

Some fellow decides to solve a contentious social situation in an anti-social way and, since he has a gun very handy, uses it to harm or kill another individual.

The antis are right about a situation such as this: no gun, no serious/deadly situation. At worst, they end up rolling around on the ground and get sticky from all the sodas and buttered popcorn that get spilled. Maybe somebody's nose gets broke.

I hate it when the antis are right.

Attempted murderers are in our midst. It's why we carry.

They are right in this case -- about a bad guy. I bet this guy DID NOT have a CHL, in which case the antis can go climb a tree.

They (antis) need cases where CHLs screw up. This isn't that (again, I would bet).
Anti-gunners seem to believe that if we just pass enough laws, we can have utopia. Unfortunately, utopia is NOT one of our choices.

I'm sure if the guy had a CWP the Enquirer would have stated it in big bold letters. This is the guy who if he didn't have a gun would pull out a knife and stab the person. Hope they throw the book at him.
