A man who just finished serving time for common law robbery could be headed back to prison.
A clerk shot a man attempting to rob the 2Fifth Clothing and Accessories store in the foot Tuesday.
Police caught up with Shamel McCallum on Tuesday night at New Hanover Regional Medical Center about an hour after police allege he tried to rob a clothing store on 17th Street.
Trouble began at 6:50 p.m. when police say a store clerk shot a man in the foot who tried to rob 2Fifth Clothing and Accessories at 708 S. 17th St.
Soon after, Wilmington police officers taped off the scene and interviewed employees. A helicopter flew overhead and a K-9 officer searched nearby neighborhoods.
Detective M.A. Overton said the suspect left a blood trail. The K-9 lost the trail.
Within 90 minutes of the robbery attempt, police said a man entered the emergency room, put his hand in his pocket to look like he had a gun and demanded treatment for his injured foot.
WPD Sgt. J.R. Tyson said hospital police chased the man into a bathroom, then talked him out after he locked the door.
Wilmington police responded to the hospital.
Soon after 8 p.m., Tyson said McCallum was receiving treatment and also said he was the suspect in the robbery attempt.
Though police say McCallum acted as if he had a weapon, they did not find one.
Tyson also said McCallum told officers he’d been released from prison two days earlier after serving time for common law robbery.
According to the N.C. Department of Correction Web site, McCallum, 28, was convicted in New Hanover County in the fall of 2007 in connection with an offense in August 2006.
He was sentenced to serve from 20 to 24 months in prison. The site lists his projected release date as Dec. 22.
