I'm not jarhead, but it has been well established that an average man can cover a distance of 21 feet before you can draw and fire your gun. There are numerous drills to illustrate and confirm this.

One of the 21 foot rule caveats is that when you do fire the attacker is on top of you so you need to use motion with the draw and fire to get off the line of attack.
