NEAR SPANISH LAKE -- St. Louis County police answering a 9-1-1 call at an apartment complex early this morning found a broken down back door and a man who had been shot. Read what neighbors at Countryside Apartments have to say about life there:

An ambulance took the 23-year-old man to an area hospital where he died, said St. Louis County Police spokeswoman Tracy Panus. Police are not releasing the man's name until his relatives are notified.

He was identified by police this afternoon as Al-regis T. Clay of 1770 El Sabado Drive.

At 1:35 a.m. today, a 9-1-1 call was received by the county police, but the caller hung up. Police were sent to the apartment in the Countryside Apartments.

When police officers got to the front door, it was locked. Then, the officers ran around back and found the broken, back patio door, Panus said. The officers went in and found the man on the floor of his bedroom.

There are no suspects at this time, Panus said.

"No one is in custody," Panus said. "Detectives are talking to people."

The man lived in the apartment with his girlfriend and her 3-year-old son, Panus said. "They are safe," Panus said. "We have had contact with them and know that they are okay."

    Detectives continue the investigation.

The street where Clay lived and was shot has had county police called there 294 times in the past six months -- considered a high number by police, Panus said. Among those calls were six for shots fired.
Just heard on the news the police have 3 suspects in custody. Update not in print yet.

that's over 1 call per day,how many units are there, that would be a place to see in your rear view mirror, but crime can happen anywhere and the best defense is a good offense

Agreed that's a bad neighborhood. All the more reason to be prepared, which sounds like he wasn't.

Sounds like a cardboard box under a bridge might be safer place to live than that apartment complex!

Grady - I've read your posts and admire your insight. But I think the thing I like most is your avatar. I always thought that Grady was the real star of Sanford and Son. Supporting actors often make the show better.

Hopefully the shooter and any accomplices are found, tried, and locked up. Doesn't Florida have a law that makes any accomplices to murder, even if they didn't pull the trigger, liable to be charged with murder? Maybe death row for the whole group?

As to the neighborhood, I'd follow archer51's advice rather than stick around there.

Yep, he was "the man". I liked his smiling attitude.

Here's the update on the capture of the suspects:

Nigel Austin-Hailey, left, Giordanio Blackburn, middle, and Terrance Washington are charged with with three counts of armed criminal action, first degree murder, kidnapping, and child kidnapping in the killing of Al-Regis Clay in north St. Louis County. (Handout)By Patrick M. O'Connell

    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    01/21/2009

SPANISH LAKE -- Three men accused of killing a Spanish Lake man also kidnapped the victim's girlfriend and her son, ordering them to take off their bloody clothes before dropping the two off at a relative's house following the shooting.

Al-Regis T. Clay, 23, was killed early Tuesday morning in his bedroom in the Countryside Apartments complex at 1770 El Sabado Drive in Spanish Lake.

Clay's girlfriend, 22, and her 3-year-old son were found safe several hours after the killing, St. Louis County police spokeswoman Tracy Panus said.

Giordanio A. Blackburn, 23, of Ferguson; Nigel "Detroit" Austin-Hailey, 35, of Ferguson; and Terrance Washington, 22, of north St. Louis County each are charged with first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, kidnapping and child kidnapping.

St. Louis county police responding to a 911 hangup call at the apartment found the back patio door broken and Clay lying inside. He later died at a hospital. It is unclear who made the 911 call, police said.

A motive for the killing was not clear, Panus said. Clay was shot in the stomach, hand, neck and head, according to the warrant.

Blackburn, known as "O," allegedly was the gunman who killed Clay, grabbed the 3-year-old and ordered the girlfriend outside to an awaiting mini van, according to the warrant. The girlfriend knew all three suspects and had met them about two years ago, police said. The men told her she should do what they say or they would hurt her and her family.

The trio then drove the girlfriend and the boy to a residence in the 400 block of South Harvey Avenue, where they were ordered to change clothes since the items they were wearing were stained with Clay's blood, according to the warrant. The girlfriend told police she saw Blackburn stash the handgun used in the killing inside a bedroom.

The girlfriend's brother then arrived at the residence. The trio then drove the girlfriend, the brother and the boy to her mother's house.

Police obtained a search warrant and recovered a handgun, bloody clothes and the mini van allegedly used in the kidnappings.

Sounds more like an execution than a break-in/robbery. Perhaps retribution for something in the past.

Those were some stupid (or cocky) bad guys.

Driving the girlfriend and kid around then taking them to your house to change cloths while you stash the gun - priceless.
