6 charged in violent NY home invasion January 22, 2009
HARRISON, N.Y. - Police say six men from the Bronx and Westchester, including a contractor who scouted an elderly couple's home, have been arrested in an attack that seriously injured the homeowners.

Police Chief David Hall says the six men followed the couple to their Harrison home on Sept. 3 and three forced their way into the house and beat the couple.

The 75-year-old man suffered a broken arm and his wife had serious head injuries.

Hall says the contractor, Gary Pilavdjian (pill-AH'-vee-un) of New Rochelle, had done some minor work at the couples' house and "set this whole thing up."

All six men were charged with burglary; no lawyer was listed for Pilavdjian at Town Court.

Police are investigating whether the men might have carried out other similar attacks.

Burglary is the only charges? What about adding assault, and throw in attempted murder to go along with it. 6 men beating on 2 old people should definitely classify as attempted murder. The older I get the less tolerance I have for scum like this.

6 charged in 'heinous' Harrison robbery

    Leslie Korngold
    The Journal News

HARRISON - A New Rochelle contractor who had done work at a couple's home is accused of setting up a brutal robbery that left them and a friend bloodied at the couple's Union Avenue home in September, police said yesterday.

The contractor, another New Rochelle man and three of the four men alleged to have been recruited for the robbery appeared yesterday in Town Court, where they signed protective orders for the benefit of the vicitms and were advised of their rights.

Steven Vandervelden, the district attorney's Organized Crime Bureau chief, said they face up to 25 years in state prison if convicted of this "particularly heinous" crime that broke the women's noses, the man's wrist and left them all battered and bloody on the home's garage floor Sept. 3.

Charged with first-degree burglary, a felony, were Gary Pilavdjian, 38, of 265 Centre Ave. and John Mandracchia, 43, of 17 Alpha Place, both of New Rochelle, and Bronx residents Vincent Buchanon, 28, and Thomas Sprauve, 41, both of 2344 Davidson Ave., Rudolph Creekmur, 20, of 1125 Findlay Ave. and Tyrone McCartha, 33, whose last known address was 1954 First Ave.

Police Chief David Hall said Pilavdjian, the contractor, had done work at the home of Freida, 73, and William Schwartz, 75.

William Schwartz was "astonished," Hall said, that the Pilavdjian, who had been in and out of his Union Avenue home, remodeled the basement and done odd jobs over two years, was accused of being behind the crime.

Pilavdjian got clients by word-of-mouth, Capt. Anthony Marraccini said. Police did not have a business name for him. An undisclosed law enforcement agency is in the early stages of looking at these men for possible connection to two other home invasions in Westchester, police said.

It's alleged in court papers that Pilavdjian and Mandracchia planned the Union Avenue heist and recruited the Bronx men. It's further alleged that Mandracchia, with Buchanon, remained in a car while McCartha, Sprauve and Creekmur dragged Schwartz, his wife and a caretaker friend from a car when they arrived home.

The victims' heads were smashed into the garage floor in an attempt to make Schwartz disarm the alarm, before gold jewelry, cash and the Mercedes-Benz were stolen. Schwartz was referred to by name during the crime, police said.

The arrests, made Wednesday, are the culmination of four months of investigation by the Westchester County District Attorney's Organized Crime Bureau, the state police Auto Crime Unit, the Bronx Central Robbery Tax Force, U.S. marshals and the New York City Department of Correction, Hall said.

Leads from people responding to posters and media pictures of the suspects pawning the stolen jewelry in New York City took police to New Orleans and Columbia, S.C., Hall said, as at least one of the suspects kept fleeing from police.

Co-defendant Sprauve was not in court. He was in an undisclosed law enforcement agency's custody on charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine, police said.

McCartha was brought in from Rikers Island, where he was being held on a parole violation, police said.

In executing search warrants in the Bronx and New Rochelle on Wednesday, police said, they found 2 ounces of crack at Buchanon's apartment. He will face charges in New York City, they said.

A seventh man, 47, from Manhattan, is in Harrison police custody but has not been charged. Police said they suspect he assisted in pawning the stolen property.

Only Mandracchia, a former contractor with no significant criminal history, living on Social Security disability with three children and wife in New Rochelle, sought bail in court yesterday. After some dispute over his being a flight risk, bail was set at $300,000 cash, $400,000 bond, down from the $500,000 requested by Vandervelden.

A grand jury is hearing the case, Vandervelden said, and the suspects have until Tuesday to indicate if they will testify before it. All the men are due in Town Court on Tuesday.

Most of the suspects have a history of committing violent crimes and narcotics trafficking, police said.

Let's hope they filed the burglary charges as a "hold" charge, and will file more later when they have a clearer idea of exactly who did what?
