Toronto’s Subway Line Reopens After Downtown Shooting (Update3)

Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Toronto’s transit system resumed its Yonge-University-Spadina subway line today following a shooting that injured one person at the downtown Osgoode station.

The Toronto Transit Commission stopped service on the line about 10:55 a.m. from the Union to the St. George stations after the shooting was reported, spokesman Brad Ross said in a telephone interview. Trains won’t stop at Osgoode station, which about 20,000 people go through each day, he said. About 700,000 people use the subway system each weekday.

The shooting occurred at 10:47 a.m., when a group of people exited a train at the Osgoode stop and a dispute broke out, Toronto Police Superintendent Hugh Ferguson said in a televised news conference. At least three shots were fired, and the victim was hit twice, sustaining non life-threatening injuries, he said.

A suspect was taken into custody, and police are looking for a second man involved in the shooting, Ferguson said.

The last shooting incident on the TTC’s subway was in March 2008 when one person was injured, Ross said.
