SPRINGFIELD — One man is dead and another injured following two separate but related shootings — one involving two Clark County Sheriff's deputies — Thursday night, Jan. 22.
Timothy L. Smith, 54, of 1529 Victory Road, Springfield, was shot multiple times at a family restaurant on West First Street shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, said Chief Stephen Moody of the Springfield Police Division.
The alleged shooter, Donald L. White, was fatally shot by two deputies about 25 minutes later on Ohio 235 at the Interstate 70 interchange following a short pursuit, said Huber Heights Police chief Rob Schommer.
Smith was flown to Miami Valley Hospital where he was listed in stable condition Friday.
In a 911 recording, Smith is heard telling a dispatcher that he'd been shot five times in the arm while sitting alone in his vehicle:
"I'm really in trouble ... hurry," he said.
Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly would not disclose the names of the deputies involved in the shooting, saying only that one was a sergeant with 13 years at the sheriff's office and the other a deputy with 10 years of service.
The shooting occurred after deputies recognized White's vehicle as the one Springfield police were looking for in connection to the West First Street shooting, said Kelly.
Deputies began a 40 mph pursuit when White pulled his vehicle over on Route 235, Kelly said.
White emerged from his vehicle with a gun and pointed it at deputies, ignoring commands to drop the weapon, said Kelly.
Deputies opened fire, hitting White at least twice and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died around 11 p.m., said Schommer.
Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, Kelly said.
An internal investigation will be conducted at the Clark County Sheriff's Office while Huber Heights police take charge of the criminal investigation, he said.
Officials would not say how many shots deputies fired.
Investigators found $12,000 in banded cash, cocaine, ammunition, binoculars and other "surveillance equipment" in White's car, Schommer said.
Smith was seen in the restaurant and left with an unnamed woman prior to the shooting, according to witnesses. The woman was not injured.
White was charged with domestic violence in Greene County in August 2001.
In June 2006, a woman White knew filed for a domestic violence protection order. According to a magistrate's findings of fact, White threatened to "put a bullet in her head."
