Woman dies in shooting near Penland Parkway

Police are investigating a shooting near Penland Parkway and Northway Drive in which one woman died and a man was seriously injured, police said.

Police and fire department emergency vehicles have rushed to the scene.

Becky Kelly, a worker at Procare Home Medical in the strip mall, said she heard three shots at about 4:45 p.m. When she looked outside, she saw one car blocking another in the parking lot. The female victim was in the driver's seat of the blocked car.

The shots were rapid. "It was so quick," she said. "I thought it was an accident."

Kelly said she's seen the woman's car often parked in the parking lot.

Kelly's supervisor told her he saw a man drive up behind the woman, get out of the car, then walk up to the woman in the car, she said. He then shot her, then turned the gun on himself, she said.


Shawna Nakarak, a worker at nearby Subway, said a customer told her that he heard five shots.

Lt. Dave Parker said at the scene that the man has been transferred to a hospital in "very critical condition." Police have closed off Northway Drive, though Penland Parkway remains open.


This took place in a relatively quiet area, where my Mom and Sister frequently visit, in fact they are in that area as I post this.
