TRIANGLE, Va. (WUSA) -
"I've never seen him in a bad mood," says a neighbor.
And yet, last night, the man neighbors and co-workers say was so friendly allegedly shot his family to death in their home.
Lois Charon, a neighbor, says they were a nice family with nice kids. "Something must have snapped."
Carillo Dean, 44, a park ranger for Prince William County for 20 years is charged in the killings. His wife, 44-year-old Elizabeth Dean and her two children, 14-year-old Brittany Kirk and 13-year-old Connor Kirk are the victims.
A mother who's son is friends with Connor is overcome with sadness upon hearing the news. "It's just awful."
Emma Parker rode the bus with Brittany to Forrest Park High school. She says, "It's not going to be the same. I already miss her."
Parker and her friend, Cheyenne Dinger, say Brittany loved her stepfather.
"They got along perfectly. She said he was so funny. He was her world."
Dean's co-workers are also devastated.
Jay Ellington, the Executive Director of the Park Authority, says "CD" was a "great employee."
Park rangers do not carry weapons on the job, but neighbors say they often saw him carrying a gun.
Erin Peterson says, "I thought it was part of his job."
Neighbors say Dean seemed like a devoted husband to a wife who had a serious illness. "He would walk her to her car because she had brittle bone disease. He was so nurturing. "
Police in Prince William County are still investigating this triple homicide.
Prince William County Police were called out to a home in the 18000 block of Cedar Drive in Triangle at about 10:45 Thursday night for an unknown situation. Officers arriving on scene discovered a shooting had occurred at the residence and it appeared to be domestic in nature. The suspect was immediately taken into custody.
Connor Kirk attended Graham Park Middle School and Brittany Kirk went to Forest Park High School.
Police say that Dean himself made the 9-1-1 call Thursday night, and then answered the door when police arrived, offering no resistance as they took him into custody.
Elizabeth Dean and Connor Kirk were pronounced dead at the scene. Brittany Kirk was flown to a nearby hospital and died at approximately 3:20 a.m. Carrillo Dean has been charged with two counts of First Degree Murder, three counts of Use of Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and aggravated malicious wounding. Since Dean was arrested prior to police receiving word of 14-year-old Brittany's death, the charges will change.
