WELLINGTON, Fla. - A popular middle school music teacher admitted to killing his neighbor who invaded his Wellington home, police said.

Heath Miller, a teacher at Howell L. Watkins Middle School, said an armed man slipped through the sliding glass door at about 2 a.m. in the 1300 block of Birkdale Drive. Authorities identified the armed man as Miller's neighbor, Robert Tomlin.

"He said that he saw a silhouette of an individual with a handgun coming in toward that bedroom door so he started to shoot," Palm Beach County sheriff's Sgt. Pete Palenzuela said.

Deputies said Tomlin wore all black clothing and a black mask at the time of the incident. Tomlin died as a result of a shootout between the two men, police said. Miller and his wife were not hurt.

Sounds like a righteous shoot. I'll bet he was surprised to find out who it was.

"A popular middle school music teacher admitted to killing his neighbor who invaded his Wellington home, police said."

One reason I don't watch that station. The reporting sounds like they have a problem with self defense in the home. They choose that opening line versus man defends himself and wife in house and fatally wounds masked intruder.

So other reports say they the home owner did not know the intruder and probably didn't know it was a neighbor especially since the intruder had a mask on.

I seriously doubt he "admitted to killing his neighbor". Probably more like I defended my wife and myself from an armed intruder.

What ever happened to just reporting the facts?

Glad to hear the home owners prevailed in this incident.

    He's gone!

I am sure the Palm Beach School District and/or the FL chapter of the NEA, or whatever union they have, can't stand the thought of a teacher who a) owns a weapon, and b) had the audacity to use it.

Sadly I have to agree with Mikl in that the teacher just may lose his job.

I'd say he did very good!

Protected his home, his wife and his life. He's a hero.

You want to see the sunrise? Then don't invade the home of upstanding people at 2am. It's really as simple as that.

Kudos to the victims (the true victims) for surviving the deadly attack. His family is alive because of his firm actions.

You are right on. Your choice of heading is much more accurate than the news station's heading.

That's why I don't watch any local station.

That plus the breathless emphatic reporting of the obvious: "The gas prices [pause for a deep breath] have gone up [pause for emphases] AGAIN." Or. "With ALL the layoffs and closures in the Valley, [pause for a deep breath] people are having a hard time COPING."

That's news -- as if no one already knew and had to be told. Even Fox does that some, but they don't come across anti-AKBA

You said "I don't watch that station." If you have a local station you can watch, consider yourself lucky.
