Alameda Co. Deputy Shot by Stray Bullet

updated 7 minutes ago

An Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy is in the hospital after he was shot during a traffic stop. The deputy made the stop at the Budget Inn on Foothill Avenue in unincorporated San Leandro just after midnight. He was outside of his patrol car when a stray bullet from nearby I-580 struck him in the leg.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office says two cars were speeding on the interstate when someone inside the first car began shooting at the second car. Two people in the second car were hit, as well as a home and the deputy. There were no injuries in the home. One person in the car was hit in the head and is in critical condition; the other person had minor injuries. The deputy was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Westbound 580 was closed until just before 6:30 a.m. while officers searched the crime scene. No arrests have been made.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Department deputy who was shot in the lower body in a highway shooting early Saturday morning will likely not need surgery to recover, police said.

The unidentifed deputy was shot near the 164th Avenue exit from westbound Interstate 580 after a vehicle shot at another vehicle.

A bullet struck the deputy who was performing an unrelated traffic stop.

Officials initially reported the deputy would need surgery, but said Sunday afternoon he might recover without it.

The driver of the car targeted by the shooting was shot in the head, and a local hospital did not release information on his condition.

A passenger in that car had minor injuries.
