GOOD: Armed Homeowner Holds Intruder For Police - Fort Myers, Fl

Fort Myers man holds burglary suspect at gunpoint | news-press.com | The News-Press

A 58-year-old Fort Myers man held a burglary suspect at gunpoint until Lee sheriff’s deputies arrived Saturday afternoon.

Errol Johnson of Beacon Boulevard told deputy John Desrosiers that he was home when he heard someone trying to break into his apartment from the window. When he went to investigate, he found a man crawling into his window.

Johnson had armed himself, and ordered the suspect to the ground, where the suspect stayed while Johnson called for help.

The suspect was on the ground when Desrosiers arrived.

Desrosiers questioned the suspect, later identified as Bryan Beard, 24, who stated he was only coming from the office when Johnson pointed a gun at him. Beard also was found to have a metal coat hanger, bent into a coil shape with a white yarn wrapped around it, in his pocket.

Beard’s response was, “It was just in my pocket!”

Beard was placed under arrest on charges of unarmed burglary and possession of burglary tools with intent to use. He was released from Lee County Jail Saturday night on $3,000 bond.
What is the use of a yarn-wrapped coiled coat hanger?

Turns out a coat hanger can be used for removing the broomstick from a sliding glass door track:

I'm sure you know that sliding glass doors are burglar favorites. Many people use the "broomstick trick" (a cut down broomstick fitted into the bottom track). It's better than nothing but the "coat hanger trick" can lift it out.
Maybe I need to rethink the aluminum softball bat I have in the slider.

Errol Johnson deserves a pat on the back (from the suspect).
He had a considerably more 'reserved trigger finger' than I believe I would have had if confronting someone coming through my window.

Stay armed...don't climb through my windows...stay safe!

I have to wonder. Can the burgular claim his rights were violated and sue the home owner or does that only work for illegals?

if he is lucky he will not be sued and put in prison for protecting his rights thats what happens in places like CA where defending yourself means you will pay the bad guy for the rest of your life...
