The shooting death of a 14-year-old boy in the District late Saturday night marked the beginning of a spree of local violence that included multiple shootings outside a Prince George’s County bar that left a 35-year-old man dead, police said.
The Prince George’s shootings have the county’s new police chief calling for legislative action that would give the police department leverage to deal with county nightspots known for criminal activity.
Arthur Daniels, 14, of Northeast, was shot to death around 11 p.m. Saturday on the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue Southeast. Police said they were unsure of a motive in the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.
Then, around 2 a.m., a fight broke out inside The Sidelines bar on the 1200 block of Capital Center Boulevard in Largo, police said. The fight intensified when two groups of men were thrown out. Outside the bar, a black man about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds opened fire, police said.
The shooting killed Vincent Tyrrell Mastin, 35, of Bowie, and wounded six others. Their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Stopping violence in and around Prince George’s bars and nightclubs has become a police department priority. In recent months, authorities have shut down nightclubs deemed problem spots. Police Chief Roberto Hylton said in a statement Sunday he planned to continue and escalate that policy to cover club events.
“This type of violence is unacceptable, and I will be initiating policy changes to ensure that the police department is notified in advance of these events so that security arrangements can be reviewed prior to the event,” Hylton said. “I may also be requesting legislation that would give the department additional leverage to deal with these types of events.”
Anyone with information about the shooting should call 301-772-4925 or 1-866-411-8477 (TIPS).
