BAD - Father kills his 5 children then himself

GRAHAM, Wash. A father apparently shot to death five of his children, ages 7 to 16, at their mobile home and then killed himself near a casino miles away, police said Saturday.

Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff, called it a domestic violence situation and a murder-suicide.

"We believe they all died of gunshot wounds," Troyer said.

Police early Saturday found the father slain from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was in his car, parked near the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, about 30 miles south of Seattle. Later in the day, Pierce County deputies checked the mobile home, which is about 20 miles southeast of the casino, and found four of the children dead in their beds and the fifth in the bathroom.

Neighbors in the Deer Run mobile home park, a neat, well-kept community nestled among towering evergreens, were shocked and weeping at the news.

"How could something like this happen?" asked Mary Riplinger, whose kids were playmates of the slain children. "Everyone's asking: Why did he do it? It's not right."

The mother of the victims was not at home, Troyer said.

He said investigators believe the husband and wife were not estranged.

"Clearly she's been very traumatized," Troyer told The News Tribune of Tacoma. "You kind of get hardened to seeing people who are killed because of their own bad actions. But these kids died through no fault of their own. This is something you never want to see."

Authorities did not release the names of the family, but Troyer identified the dead children as four girls and a 7-year-old boy.

Another neighbor, Dale Lund, told The Seattle Times the 7-year-old boy who was killed played at times with his grandson and the boys shared the same school bus stop and attended the same elementary school together.

He said the dead boy played in his own yard most of the time.

"They pretty much kept to themselves over there," Lund said.

Dozens of investigators were on the scene trying to reconstruct the crime and discover a motive.

As much as I hate to see it, with the economy in the condition it is in and the jobless rate climbing. I think you can look for more and more of it happening.

It's gonna get worse before it gets better.

Seriously for many people it takes just a little bit of load greater than normal to break their back and pressure spike more intense than they are accustomed to cause a pipe to burst.
We amongst us should IRL be keeping an eye out for and on our own to make sure our friends and loved ones in general are doing okay.

Sometimes all folks need is a beer (one beer not a six pack!) and an ear to blow off steam so as to relieve pressure.

Terrible. I don't know that this could possibly be economically driven. That he ended it near a casino may imply he had a gambling problem and was in some sort of financial hardship. No matter what his problem, there was certainly no reason to end the lives of his children also.

Sadly, I have to agree with archer51 and Janq, that we may not have seen the worst of this type of senseless, unforgiveable cruelty and cowardice.

It is it already to safe to assume that the "Brady" people will use this as an argument for more gun laws??? Why do such extreme groups look for extreme examples for their leftist agendas?

Unreal. A new tragedy every day. Even though the circumstances of all these instances are different, the end result is still the same. Senseless violence and innocent dead.

I just don't know what to say about this. It seems like everyday we hear about a new tragedy and it's really making me wonder what this world is coming to.

Yup. The media will continue hyping up these stories for their own ratings, while continuing to ignore the defensive shootings and gun usages that far outnumber these incidents, even recently when these tragic killings are many.

What kind of 'man' can kill his own children?
    A complete coward...

The list of mass killings for 2009 is growing, and surely the anti's will try to drum up their rhetoric these events.

    This is not good.

Update: Police: Dad killed kids because wife was leaving

    As reported via Yahoo.com:

GRAHAM, Wash. Investigators believe a man fatally shot his five children in their home and killed himself after he found out his wife was leaving him for another man, a sheriff's spokesman said Sunday.

The bodies of James Harrison's children were found Saturday in the family's mobile home in Graham, about 15 southeast of Tacoma. Harrison had been found earlier in the day, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot, behind the wheel of his car in Auburn, about 18 miles north of Graham.

Authorities haven't released the family's name, but relatives have identified them as the Harrisons.

The man and his 16-year-old daughter had found his wife with another man at a store in Auburn on Friday night, Pierce County Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer told The News Tribune of Tacoma.

Ryan Peden, the daughter's classmate, had said she told him Friday night that her parents had gotten into a fight and her mother had left. The father followed the mother and tried to get her to return, said Peden.

Troyer said the woman told her husband she was not going home and that she was leaving him for the man with her at the store.

    "He was devastated," Troyer said.

Investigators believe the father later killed his children and returned to the area near the store looking for his wife. His body was found near the store, Troyer said. He left no suicide note.

Troyer did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press, but sent an e-mail confirming his account to The News Tribune.

Four of the children were shot in their beds and the fifth was shot in the bathroom, Pierce County deputies said. Auburn Police Sgt. Scott Near said their father had apparently killed himself with a rifle.

Neighbor Ron Vorak said he called 911 at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday after one of the Harrisons' relatives couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

"He knocked on the door, and knocked on a couple of windows," Vorak said of the relative. "He walked around the side of the house, looked into the window. He could see somebody laying on the bed."

On Sunday, the mobile home where the five children ages 7 to 16 were slain became a makeshift memorial as neighbors left cards and bouquets of flowers. School officials said they were making arrangements to have grief counselors available when teachers and students returned to school.

"We're going to try to get through this the best we can given the circumstances," said Jeff Davis, Orting School District superintendent. "In a small community like this, we know these kids. Teachers know the kids. All the kids know the kids."

Davis said the eldest, Maxine, was a 10th grader at Orting High School. Jamie was in the eighth grade and her sister Samantha in the sixth grade at Orting Middle School. The two youngest, Heather and James, were second-graders at Orting Primary School.

Carolyn and Raymond Bader, a former neighbor of the family, told The Seattle Times they often heard the father yelling at the children. The Baders said they called the sheriff's department and Child Protective Services several times with their concerns.

"We did all we could to help these kids," Raymond Bader said. "We tried to protect these kids. We did what we could."

Candy Johnson, an aunt of the mother, described Harrison as a strict, controlling husband and father who didn't allow his wife to make decisions without asking him first.

"My niece has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said, adding that Harrison had impregnated the mother when she was 13.

A neighbor, Sherre Lund, who lives in the mobile home park, signed a community notebook left in from of the family's house. She wrote: "God Bless the five little ones. God bring peace to Mom."

Was there a rash of senseless shootings when the economy was actually bad in the 1930s?

With almost 92% employment, virtually full employment with many of the rest on the public dole, it is missing the cause to blame it on 'the economy.'
