FORT BLISS -- A soldier had been at Fort Bliss for only a week when she was shot and killed by her civilian husband Saturday afternoon at a shopping center on the army post, a military official said Sunday.
The soldier's husband, whose name had not been released, died Sunday morning at Thomason Hospital after shooting himself with a handgun after the shooting of his wife at the Fort Bliss Post Exchange, Fort Bliss garrison commander Col. Edward Manning said.
Manning identified the slain soldier as 19-year-old Pfc. Cassaundra Nichole Beckel, who arrived at the army post March 28.
Manning said there were no known problems involving the couple during their short time at Fort Bliss.
The FBI, which deals with civilian crime on federal property, continues to investigate the shooting. No one else was injured. An FBI spokeswoman said Sunday evening that she could not discuss the condition of Beckel's husband.
Beckel listed Seattle as her hometown, but post officials said her family is in Missouri. Her family could not be reached for comment.
Beckel became a soldier only recently. She joined the Army on Nov. 26 in Seattle. She had completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before being sent to Fort Bliss for Advance Individual Training.
As an Advance Individual Training student, Beckel was staying at the barracks while her husband lived off post, officials said.
"I want to say our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased as well as with all those affected by this tragedy," Manning said.
"I want to reassure the entire community that again we consider this an isolated act of violence against the soldier and there was no attempt to harm others in the store," Manning said.
According to El Paso Times archives, the last homicide on Fort Bliss property was in 2003 when Debra Harmon-Frakes was shot and killed by her husband Ben Rogers Frakes at the Fort Bliss RV Park near Chapin High School. Both were civilians
