Angry Pirates attack second US vessel!

Here we go again... we know where they are based... why not declare war on the pirates? They are an obvious threat. Oh yeah, I'm sure Obama wants to reason with them... why the heck would you reason with anyone that attacks civilian ships?! I fear for the republic.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Pirates attack second US vessel

Pirates have used rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons to attack another US merchant ship off the coast of Somalia.

The pirates damaged the Liberty Sun, which was carrying a cargo of food aid, but were not able to board it.

The ship asked for assistance from the American warship involved in the rescue of a US captain seized last week.

Pirates have vowed to avenge the deaths of those killed in recent rescue operations by US and French forces.

BBC security correspondent Rob Watson says that although it is not clear if the latest attack was intended as the promised revenge, it shows that pirates have not been deterred by military operations.

Despite renewed US calls to quell piracy, four more vessels have been successfully seized over the past two days.

    Details of attack

Owners of the Liberty Sun and the US military confirmed reports of the latest, failed attack, which took place on Tuesday at midday local time.

Some details were revealed in an e-mail from one of the crewmen to his mother at her home in Illinois, AP news agency reported.

"We are under attack by pirates, we are being hit by rockets, also bullets," Thomas Urbik, 26, told his mother, Katy.

"We are barricaded in the engine room and so far no-one is hurt. (A) rocket penetrated the bulkhead but the hole is small. Small fire, too, but put out."

Lt Nathan Christensen, of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, told the BBC that the ship had taken "evasive manoeuvre action" which had prevented the pirates from boarding.

The Liberty Sun had been en route to Mombasa from Houston, Texas, when the attack took place.

After coming under fire, the ship immediately requested assistance from the USS Bainbridge, said owners Liberty Maritime Corp in a statement.

The navy destroyer arrived some hours later, by which time the pirates had gone.

"We are grateful and pleased that no-one was injured and the crew and the ship are safe," said the Liberty Maritime Corp statement.

The ship did sustain some damage, it said, but was able to resume its journey to Mombasa.
Merchants should take it upon themselves to take up arms and defend their crew, cargo, and ships. Since the government is obviously only going to protect them when they call for help. The same old argument, only... When minutes matter, the Navy is only hours away.

Maybe these cargo ship companies should hire trained combat personnel to stand watch on the decks. They would need to be pretty heavily armed and have the ability to return fire.

Its not like these pirates have huge ships with deck guns. If they attack, blast 'em out of the water.

Hey, maybe I just thought of a new business venture? Any applicants?

They don't have huge ships with deck guns...

Despite renewed US calls to quell piracy, four more vessels have been successfully seized over the past two days.
But they could mount deck guns on the larger boats they have stolen... the threat will only get worse if action is not taken.

Takes sooooooo long for U.S. warships to get to the area...why not answer the call for help with one of these?

Well, seeing as how the F22 project has been SCRAPPED by the our good friend Mr. Gates, I doubt we could spare one. Nice thought though.

Rcher - it's already been planned and the beginnings of it put in motion. If you have ever worn a Budweiser on your chest or served as a Coast Guard maritime interdiction specialist, call your nearest Blackwater/Xe recruiter. I'll guess that the pay will be somewhere around $500 a day and up.

SweetSig - It's my understanding that the F22 is simply slowed down, not scrapped... And hey, you're getting MORE money for the F35. For the price of one of those, we could stand up an entire anti-piracy task force (or another Ranger Regiment...)

Move vote is for another Ranger Regiment. They'll get more done.

Anyway, why do we continue to ship free food over there? Lets stop that, then the hungry Africans will solve their own problems-that includes the pirates.

I think the food aid is (mostly) for Kenya... As far as I know, there is (relatively) very little aid going to Somalia because it is too lawless and violent to effectively distribute it.

Well Kenya is a pro-westren Goverment and is relatively stable for Africa.

We need them as an ally to combat terrorism in the failed states of Somilia and Sudan.

We left Somalia after the events in "Black Hawk Down" happened with the Rangers and Delta. We see how they "solve their own problems".

We have the technology, when a ship calls out they are under attack. Train a satellite or AWAC on them and follow the pirates back to their home base or mother ship. Then send in the SEALS.

According to the news reports they still have over 300 hostages. Otherwise I would suggest sending in F-18 Hornets with some "care packages".

    Ya think?

Being something other than disarmed would certainly help. Those of us here would see that as an obvious first step. At minimum, they need small-to-medium arms that could be handled by crew; ideally, it would also involve retrofitting a number of smaller deck guns/cannon to help make the point. Better still, hiring a trained security detail would be great. Of course, all of that costs money.

That's actually the biggest hurdle. In that their insurance companies won't cover them or raise their rates to impossible amounts if they want to arm their ships.
