Seattle, WA: Woman with CPL shoots man in altercation

This one is still developing. It happened on Saturday afternoon. Initial reports (from the ultra-left-wing news media here) were that the woman (shooter) started an argument with the "victim" while they were on the bus. He then followed her off the bus and spat on her, whereupon she shot him once in the chest.

Of course, now facts are starting to get in the way of the original bologna.

    Latest update:
Local News | Woman who shot bus rider had gun permit, police say | Seattle Times Newspaper

Police say a woman accused of shooting a man Saturday in downtown Seattle after arguing with him on a bus had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

The woman, who was booked into jail on suspicion of assault, allegedly told police she had just exited a Route 27 Metro Transit bus at Third Avenue and Seneca Street when he called her a vulgar name and lunged at her. She then shot him in the upper-right chest, Seattle police said. She also said he spat at her, police say.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. An update on his condition was not available Sunday
    The first update:

After an argument on a No. 27 bus in downtown Seattle, a woman pulled a gun and seriously wounded a man at Third Avenue and Seneca Street about 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

King County sheriff Transit Police Sgt. Bill Hurley said the man got on the bus and apparently was behaving strangely, "acting a little crazy, mumbling" to himself.

The woman said something critical of his behavior and an argument ensued, passengers told police.

When the woman got off at Third and Seneca, the man at the last moment followed other passengers out and rushed toward her, Hurley said. She pulled out a gun and shot him.

The man was treated by Seattle Fire Department paramedics, then taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was in surgery Saturday afternoon. Hurley said the man's injuries are "life-threatening." His condition wasn't available.

Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt said the woman, who is in her 30s, claimed the man spat at her.

"She pulled her gun out and shot him once in the chest," Witt said, adding did not know if the gun used is a legally held weapon.

Other passengers leaving the bus were on the sidewalk when the shooting happened. Many also witnessed the dispute on the bus, Witt said. She said the woman and man did not know each other.

"It seems he instigated" the argument, Witt said.

Police interviewed the woman and may book her for investigation of assault, Witt said.

The bus driver declined to talk to a reporter, telling another Metro official: "I'm shaken up."

Hurley, who was supervising the scene an hour after the shooting, gave his account based on what he'd heard from his officers and from Metro Transit staff at the scene.

He said Transit Police are routinely called out by Metro drivers with unruly passengers. "It happens quite a lot," said Hurley. "We get called to deal with these people and get them off the bus."

In this case, he said, the driver had noticed the man acting strangely, but "there was nothing unusual enough for the driver to call us."

The No. 27 bus route runs from Lake Washington near the Interstate 90 bridge to downtown Seattle.
I can't put up the original article because it was so inaccurate they took it down.

IMO there are still too few details known.

Ditto, more info I very much hope comes out.
Something like he was screaming at a child or being threatening to her or others on the bus.

Anything that is more than weird guy in a city gets on city bus and mumbles to himself audibly.

Acting weird and mumbling or even being scary looking/seeming is not unlawful.
Hopefully this does not become a case of licensed to carry person with firearm concealed under cape talks trash in attempt to change other persons socially inappropriate but not unlawful behavior.
To that she would be seen as the aggressor and aggravator...the catalyst and active victimizer, and not the reactionary victim.

sheesh I sure hope there was more to it than that because if for every time a strange person got on a Seattle bound bus around here I would be shooting non stop 7 days a week!

Not many *useful* details so far.

Based solely on the info available, I call it a good shoot. He started the confrontation and then FOLLOWED HER off the bus. Getting spit on may be poor justification for shooting someone, but you get no guarantees that the assault will stop there. It would take less than two seconds for a man to deliver irreversible and crippling brain damage to a woman within arms reach.

Spitting is assault, IIRC. Especially if aimed at LEO or EMTs.
Not worth killing over, IMO, by itself.
Yet, if person has HIV/AIDs, or HepB?, might be very dangerous.

    Agreed, not enough info.
Give the woman a medal, and send her and her piece home.
    OMO. YMMV.

A woman who police say shot a man on a downtown Seattle sidewalk Saturday after an argument on a Metro bus was expected to be released from jail today while prosecutors continue to mull over any charges in the case.

The 30-year-old community college student, who lives in Yesler Terrace, was initially ordered held on $200,000 bail by a King County District Court judge this afternoon. But prosecutors then said they would need longer than the 72-hour deadline to review the case and decide on charges.

Arrestees can be held in jail for only 72 hours without being formally charged with a crime.

Prosecutors said the woman has prior convictions for firearm brandishing and assault in Utah in 1996 and 1997. But she has no record of crime here, and a public defender told the judge that the woman has lived here for about a decade.

Meanwhile, the man police said she shot in the chest, 25-year-old Emmanuel Salters, remained at Harborview Medical Center today on a ventilator, prosecutors said. The bullet nicked his aorta, they said.

The woman was riding a No. 27 bus with her partner and four children just after noon Saturday when Salters climbed aboard and an argument ensued about Salters' unnerving behavior, police reports said.

When the woman and her family got off the bus, Salters followed them and allegedly made a rude comment to her and spat. The woman then pulled a pistol and fired it at Salters' chest. Salters staggered into the intersection of Third Avenue and Seneca Street and collapsed.

An FBI agent, Patrick Garry, heard the shot and saw the woman holding the gun, the police report said. The agent ran to the scene and held her until transit police arrived.

Police later said the woman has a concealed-weapon permit for the gun.

The woman's partner, who came to the King County Jail for the bail hearing, left the courtroom in tears and declined to comment.
If she is 30 years old now, and has firearms brandishing and assault convictions in 1996-97, that means she was 17-18 when she was convicted? hmmm.....

The man exited the bus (his stop?) and came at her (man vs woman). She was with her children (had a duty to protect them). Not enough info, but doesn't appear that she ASKED the dirtbag to follow her...
Sounds to me like this guy was looking for trouble and found it...we'll see.

Thanks for the update. Could have been brandishing with a longgun, legal to possess at that age.

Since the Times so fairly pulled shooters records and shared it - I thought I'd pull the record for the guy who got shot.

Seattle Municipal Court shows 6 criminal cases closed, 2 pending, and 1 pending criminal traffic case.

    Possession of Marijuana (Dismissed) 2002
    Assault (Dismissed) 2002
2 counts Assault, 1 count Harassment (Dismissed) 2002
    Minor in Possession (Dismissed) 2002
    Assault (Not Guilty) 2003
    Theft (Guilty) 2005
Assault (Dismissed) plead to Property Damage (Guilty) 2006
    Theft (Guilty, Sentence Suspended) 2006

Also a bunch of cases in King and Pierce County Courts - Juvenile so I cannot retrieve it.

    matiki,

    I went back and re-read...

Is this something you know? Or, just a possibility you've put together?
I can see where it might be a logical guess. I know that 'partner' could be newsspeak for a lesbian SO.

(Not busting your chops. Just curious.)
