In the News: Good - Detroiter kills teen home intrusion suspect

Police: Detroiter kills teen home intrusion suspect | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

    -----------------------------------------------------
A resident of Detroit's east side shot and killed a suspected intruder early this morning as the 19-year-old climbed in the window of his home, Detroit Police said.

The teen suspect ran from the home in the 11300 block of Whitehill after being shot in the head and chest with the resident's handgun. He collapsed in front of his own house and died at about 3:30 a.m., according to police.

At 7 a.m., Detroit Police homicide detectives were still questioning the 39-year-old resident of the home, which lies northeast of Hayes and East Outer Drive.

A 38-year-old professional who’s lived on the other side of the street from the shooting location for three years said she’s “glad” that her neighbor shot the suspected intruder.

“Not good that he’s dead, but good that it sends a message,” said the woman, who asked not to be identified out of fear. “I can bet you everyone on this block has a weapon, and they’re going to defend themselves.”

She and her 30-year-old boyfriend, who also lives on Whitehill, said there have been a series of break-ins in the area recently.

He lamented the suspect's death as senseless.

“What’d he die over -- a VCR?” he said.

Ray McDonald lives a few blocks away and works as a mechanic at the automotive shop next door to where the shooting happened. He said the incident exemplifies how residents of Detroit have become “trapped” by violence.

“Most people who sit in their living room and watch the news think they understand,” he said. “They can’t. You have to be in this.”

Hopefully they will diminish across the nation soon!

I like the neighbor. Wish she would move next door to me.

I really dislike it when the media call a nineteen-year-old adult a "teen" in a case like this. If you're man enough to do the crime, you had better be man enough to pay the piper....

It is a senseless death. It is also his own fault. We all make our own decisions and must live (or die) by the consequences.

+1 for what the neighbor said. Hopefully the crime rate will plummet on their block now.
