A man suspected of trying to rob a Tillman's Corner business Monday afternoon was shot to death by someone at the store, and a second suspect, who is 18 years old, is in custody, police said.
The dead man's name was withheld by authorities Monday night pending notification of his relatives. Police also would not release the name of the man who did the shooting. Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said the shooter worked at the business but would not say whether he was the owner or an employee.
Police spokesman Officer Christopher Levy said Durrell Smith, 18, has been charged with first-degree robbery. He was being held in Mobile County Metro Jail without bail Monday night.
Officers were called about 2:50 p.m. to the Cash-N-A-Dash, which describes itself as a short-term loan service, at 5646 Old Pascagoula Road., after receiving a report of a robbery, according to Levy.
Cash-N-A-Dash is located in a building housing three other small businesses in the heart of the Tillman's Corner commercial district.
Levy said officers discovered a man shot to death in the parking lot of The Oaks at Tillman's Corner, a two-building strip of businesses separated from Cash-N-A-Dash by a grassy knoll and a large oak tree.
A body covered by a tarp could be seen about 60 yards west of the front door of Cash-N-A-Dash.
Levy said at least two men took part in the robbery, and shots were fired just outside the door of the business. Police marked five spots near the door where spent shell casings were discovered.
Police said witnesses gave a description of one suspect who fled south along Tillman's Corner Parkway.
Levy said a man fitting the description, later identified as Smith, was picked up minutes later at the Super 8 Motel about a quarter-mile south of the shooting scene on the parkway, which connects Old Pascagoula Road with U.S. 90 and winds through a series of small businesses and motels.
Levy said an investigation is continuing to determine if anyone else was involved in the robbery.
Terrie Atchison works at nearby Desire, a lingerie and novelty shop in a strip of businesses at the corner of Old Pascagoula Road and Tillman's Corner Parkway.
"A lady who works with me and I were standing outside and we heard five shots, really fast," Atchison said. "We dropped to the ground immediately and then went inside.
"Someone said after we went inside that one of the men ran right past the front of our store. Everyone in the center locked their doors. As soon as it happened we could already hear the sirens," Atchison said.
A Winn-Dixie grocery store stands about 100 yards south of the shooting scene on the other side of Old Pascagoula Road. A number of people gathered near the store to watch police investigate, and a number of others viewed the scene from balconies at the Oak Tree Apartments, across the road from The Oaks.
Monday's shooting was the second violent death of a criminal suspect in that area of southwest Mobile in eight days.
On April 26, William Odel Wood II was shot to death at the Interstate 10-Interstate 65 junction by Mobile County sheriff's deputies during a high-speed running gunbattle.
Wood was a suspect in the shooting of four people in the Barnwell community of south Baldwin County late at night on April 25. Three of those victims died.

3pm robbery, in a fairly developed area no less? Pretty bold. I guess they ended up with more than they were expecting.
The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.

Perhaps the store should be renamed to Cash and Hot Lead in a Dash...
anyway, good shooting.
Anti-gunners seem to believe that if we just pass enough laws, we can have utopia. Unfortunately, utopia is NOT one of our choices.

Shouldn't they tack on a murder charge for his downed low life partner? I know in Fla he would get hit with it.
