Melbourne chief wants probe of errant SWAT team raid

    BY J.D. GALLOP • FLORIDA TODAY • May 6, 2009

MELBOURNE — Police Chief Don Carey has ordered an internal review of a SWAT team operation that targeted the wrong apartment last month while executing a search warrant.

The daytime raid on an apartment located at 825 E. University Boulevard happened April 29 and ended with police officers requesting paramedics for at least one resident, although the treatment was refused, officials said.

“It’s under investigation,” said Cmdr. Ron Bell, spokesman for the Melbourne Police Department. “Apparently a search warrant was issued for one apartment and we went to another.

The search warrant on the correct address was carried out after SWAT team members realized they hit the wrong apartment.”

Because the case is under internal investigation, details about exactly what happened after armed SWAT members stormed the apartment are being withheld pending the conclusion of the review, officials said.

But the warrant was not part of a drug sweep, officials said. It was not immediately clear if an arrest resulted from a search of the intended target.

“It’s not a matter of who ordered the operation but rather what happened. That’s why it was requested by the chief,” Bell said.
This is the nightmare scenario of all scenarios, IMO.
Just what we all talked about a few days ago in one of the threads.
Bad situation. Apparently not the worst of outcomes. I will assume there is one very upset resident in the 'wrong' apartment.

And let me guess... the person in the wrong apartment gets no recourse due to the negligence of the SWAT team?

    Why would you think that?

If the person in the wrong apartment wants to push it I am sure they will be compensated accordingly for a violation of civil rights.

Oh yeah... they should get all physical damages to the home repaired and some sort of monetary compensation from the city.

I'm just extremely glad no one got shot!

Because the story failed to mention anything resembling an apology.

I was just wondering how that would play out.

True, I just always take things from the media with a grain of salt. It is incredible how much information they [accidentally?] leave out.

Hopefully, the investigation will result not only in a change of policy so this doesn't happen again, and appropriate compensation, whatever that may be, along with an apology, for the resident who was wrongly rousted out.

    Hopefully...
