MELBOURNE — Police Chief Don Carey has ordered an internal review of a SWAT team operation that targeted the wrong apartment
last month while executing a search warrant.
The daytime raid on an apartment located at 825 E. University Boulevard happened April 29 and ended with police officers requesting paramedics for at least one resident, although the treatment was refused, officials said.
“It’s under investigation,” said Cmdr. Ron Bell, spokesman for the Melbourne Police Department. “Apparently a search warrant was issued for one apartment and we went to another
The search warrant on the correct address was carried out after SWAT team members realized they hit the wrong apartment.”
Because the case is under internal investigation, details about exactly what happened after armed SWAT members stormed the apartment are being withheld pending the conclusion of the review, officials said.
But the warrant was not part of a drug sweep, officials said. It was not immediately clear if an arrest resulted from a search of the intended target.
“It’s not a matter of who ordered the operation but rather what happened. That’s why it was requested by the chief,” Bell said.
