    Bad: Firearms Instructor Shoots Student

    Firearms Instructor Shoots Student

ADDISON TOWNSHIP, Mich (WXYZ) - Police say a man is recovering after being shot in the face by the instructor during a Concealed Pistol License class.

It happened on Dequindre in Addison Township. Police say the shooting was accidental.

The investigation has determined that the instructor was demonstrating two guns during the class. Officers say he first showed a semi automatic hand gun loaded with plastic training bullets. He then displayed a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver that he thought was also loaded with plastic training bullets.

It was during that portion of the class that the .38 caliber revolver accidentally went off. The bullet ricocheted off the instructional table, hitting the student in the face.

The 52-year-old was hit on his left cheek. He immediately received medical help from another student, while other participants in the class called 911. He is currently in stable condition at Troy Beaumont hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and will be reviewed by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges.

I'm just shaking my head on that one.

    That violated several safety rules.

I have yet to see a gun go off accidentally
If your finger is not on the trigger it wont shoot.

I don't see anything accidental about this. I'm glad the student survived, I hope they make a full and speedy recovery.

I'm glad he's going to be okay. Too early to make a joke about hoping he gets his money back for the class?

    I have a commandment I always follow.

Unless I'm actually on target and shooting my weapon, I will never pull the trigger on a gun unless I have physically inspected the gun both visually, and by inserting my finger into the open action.

This avoids negligent actions when showing a weapon to another person, demonstrating a technique, field stripping a gun for cleaning or maintenance, or even for dry fire practice.

When I pass a semi-automatic weapon to a friend, I do it with the action locked open so they can physically check the gun as well before they close the slide. Revolvers get passed with the cylinder open. Actions open on rifles and shotguns.

I always follow the 4 cardinal rules... but above that, I just won't pull a trigger unless my finger has gone inside the open action and I have looked inside.

No accident. Instructor got mixed up and confused, about which gun was which, and was negligent for pointing it at someone; beyond stupid for actually playing with the trigger while pointing it at someone.

    Ayyyyyyyy!!!

Gotta keep an eye on that booger picker. And never ever let live rounds and practice rounds come within 100 feet of each other. I keep all my gun related items in my safe except for the dummy rounds which sit in a closet across the house. Only empty (triple checked) guns are allowed near that closet.

Is there any doubt about that?

Prior to taking my last class, the instructor did not allow ANY ammo inside the classroom...PERIOD...had to empty all duffel bags, pockets, firearms, etc...everything was inspected before we started.
