good/lucky Police Arrest Man With Rifle Outside Portland Church
This could have been very bad. luckily the officer was aware of his surroundings an noticed something that didn't seem right.
PORTLAND (AP) -- Police have arrested a man they say was loading a hunting rifle outside a church and planning to harm someone inside.
Portland Police Capt. Vern Malloch said Monday a police officer assigned to Portland High School "probably avoided a tragedy" by making the arrest after spotting the armed man in an alley alongside the high school and First Parish Church.
Malloch says Herbert Jones, 46, made references to pedophiles being in the church. An Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was under way at the time.
Jones faces charges including terrorizing and possession of a firearm by a felon, as well as stalking a woman at the AA meeting. Malloch says a passenger in Jones' BMW convertible was charged, as well. Jail records list no attorney for the men.
PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) - Charges have been upgraded against a man who police spotted loading a rifle outside the First Parish Church in Portland on Monday.
Herbert Jones is now facing a charge of attempted murder.
A police officer inside Portland High School spotted Jones in front of the church loading rounds into a rifle.
Investigators say jones was planning to shoot people attending an alcoholic anonymous meeting inside.
At his first court appearance Wednesday a judge ordered that he be held on $500,000 bail.

Good on the LEO for keeping an eye on his surroundings. Mr Jones sounds like he needs a good long cooling off period, and probably some support sessions of his own.
Seems like churches and schools are a favorite location for crazies to stalk. Schools can be argued to be soft targets with the near universal "no guns" rules, but what about churches? Seems like most are not posted, and some even have semi-pro security. And lets not forget that it's supposed to be a house of god.
I don't attend church/mosque/temple services, but I can respect the significance of those locations. But then I also don't hunt people. I guess it could be that there's an extra shock factor to shooting up those types of facilities?

The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.

This could have been a real horror story. great job by the Police Officer who was on the lookout. +100 for him.
What makes this really weird IMO is that the guy was not alone, he had someone with him. Usually these are one man deals. How many of you know someone who would accompany you to go shoot up a church full of innocent folks ?
"Malloch says Herbert Jones, 46, made references to pedophiles being in the church."
Maybe this guy has a history with the church, may have been abused, or had a kid abused....who knows.....no good reason to slaughter innocents anyway.

Historically, most of the people in a church were of one social group, so churches were a favorite target of anyone who wanted to hit that group. Like a Scottish clan, for example.
We're going to see an upswing in targeted houses of worship here in the US what with the Moslems moving in.
