Really... given the financial problems California has, wouldn't a garage sale be a smarter plan...? If you want them out of the state, you could sell those by the pound to someone in Texas or Florida...
Also... isn't a "no questions asked" gun turn-in the perfect way to dispose of a murder weapon...? I seriously doubt they are doing ballistics tests on 1,700 weapons...

The state is in a financial meltdown and they are melting guns that they could at the very least auction off to the highest bidder like most police agencies do.I'd bet that 40,000 pounds of guns would bring a fair price.

Wouldn't it be nice if they would just issue a couple of those with each CCW license and make sure that they put that on the news so the BG's would see it....Like Mr. O says....spread the wealth and everyone wins....

I am waiting for them to do a buy back here in the Houston area. I have a couple of real high quality firearms ( Make Hi Points look like Gold Cups) That would like to sell to the government. I would then of course take that cash and convert it into an AR or a nice CPO Sig.

Two statements (paraphrasing) that stood out:
1. Taking these guns off the street...
Really. They were probably in people's homes used for "legitimate" hunting, sport or protection. I am sure no one found these guns just lying around in the street.
2. Taking illegal guns off the street...
Really. How do you know that? I bet they were all owned by law abiding people who just didn't want them or needed the cash. And what is an illegal gun anyways? Pretty much all guns in this country are legal, it is the criminal use that makes them bad.
