Florida Police Fatally Shoot Man in His Bedroom

On Foxnews.com; notice how the title is misleading

    Monday, June 15, 2009
    Associated press

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. A Port St. Lucie police officer is on administrative leave with pay while authorities investigate the shooting of a 44-year-old man in his bedroom.

Police were called early Sunday to the home Manuel Salvador Morales Jr. shared with his parents because relatives said Morales was threatening himself with knives. Police spokesman Tom Nichols says two officers confronted Morales, who was armed and failed to comply with their commands. No additional details about the confrontation or how Morales was armed were released.

Nichols says Officer Albert Riccardi fired two shots at Morales, who was hit twice in the torso and pronounced dead at a hospital.

Morales' sister says he had recently been treated for schizophrenia and had been drinking Saturday night.

    Sounds like suicide by cop.

My sentiments exactly. Of course, it mentions schizophrenia -- perhaps he was off his meds and not really in his right (sane) state of mind?

The guy was threatening himself with knives - dies by gunshot. Little ironic don'tcha think?

Sometimes those that want to die don't have the "guts" to do it themselves and ask for help by turning their inner directed homicide outward. Thus requring the responding rescue personnel to commit the final act for them.

    Hmm. Interesting thought.

Generally speaking, a less lethal tool really isnt the right choice in a lethal situation.

    Two officers there.

    It's permissible, with lethal backup.

If there's time to coordinate, that'd probably be the best solution.

Of course, sometimes the suspect has other ideas......

Not every department has the money to put a lot of tasers on the street. Not every department has the money to get all of their officers crisis intervention training. Even if your department has that kind of money it does not mean that those specially trained and equiped officers are going to be available to respond every time they are needed. They get tied up with regular bad guys too.
You call 9-1-1 you get the unit that is available to respond at that time.
