Multiple Armed Gunmen Open Fire at New Mexico Denny's

    Saturday, June 20, 2009

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Police in Albuquerque say a restaurant employee was killed after several armed suspects attempted a takeover-style robbery at a Denny's Restaurant.

Police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby says "multiple" armed suspects rushed the packed northwest Albuquerque restaurant at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

A female employee of the restaurant was shot and killed.

Two people have been detained, but Hamby says it is unclear yet if they are the suspects in the robbery. A police tactical team has surrounded a home in the northwest part of the city where other potential suspects are believed to have fled.

Hamby says the information is sketchy because detectives have more than 60 witnesses to interview.

What are New Mexico's gun laws like? If there was ever a reason to carry, this is one.

Denny's is one step up from the Waffle House, but far beneath the pale of decent society. Where else can you go and hear the waitress us the F-Word on her cell phone right after she takes your order?

Wow! What the heck did you order, anyway?

    To the OP...
I fear just this scenario...I am constantly looking at who comes in any place we are eating. Sitting in the right spot IS important for SD reasons.

Rolling back to 6am that morning ...

    Yikes! from Albuquerque.

I can't stand Denny's, but there is no reason this can't happen anywhere else, like in a Chili's or somewhere that you can't legally carry.

Just the musings of a pessimist here, but with the continued decline of economy, and onset of a real 'malaise'(not Jimmy Carter's self serving, declared malaise)and the phenomenal rise in numbers of inner city gangs,I believe this is potentially the next big thing in crime. Can anyone else envision this? And then,......the M/L thing?

    M/L thing? what?

I had an incident, and an officer told me there was a noticible increase in property crimes. This was 6 months ago.

Here's another important tidbit buried in the statutes:
10.8.2.16 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF LICENSE:
    A. Carrying only handguns listed on license. No person shall carry a concealed handgun of a different category or higher caliber than is indicated on the license issued to that person by the department. A licensee shall only carry one (1) concealed handgun at any given time.
    And another:
    B. Carrying while impaired. Pursuant to NMSA 1978 Section 30-7-4, no person shall carry a concealed handgun while impaired by the use of alcohol, controlled substances, or over-the-counter or prescribed medications.

For the people who only carry when they go somewhere they think is risky - I don't know of ANYONE who would consider "Denny's" a risky place to visit.

WE don't pick the place \ time of an assault - the BG picks the place and time...
