That's gotta sting.
When I drop my mag to clean my handgun I eject the chambered round and then I check again to make sure nothing is there, I may even do it again for good measure. Total time from dropped mag to slide removed after double checking for a round is all of 30 to 45 seconds. It ain't that hard.

Newberry man shot, injured while cleaning gun

A Newberry man accidentally shot himself in the leg while cleaning a gun he had owned for about a week.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Frank Kirkelia, 59, was taken to North Florida Regional Medical Center with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his upper right thigh.
"It was a Glock that he bought last week and was cleaning," said sheriff's spokesman Lt. Steve Maynard. "Apparently the magazine fell out and he did not realize that there was still a round in the chamber."
The shooting was classified as accidental and no charges were filed.

I wonder if it's possible to make a pistol that does not have to be 'racked' to fire. In other words, the top round in the magazine rests in the chamber. Dropping the magazine truly clears the weapon.
