    Question Husband accidentally shoots wife

Willis man says he mistook wife for intruder, shot her in chest - 7/21/09 - Houston News - abc13.com

WILLIS, TX (KTRK) -- A man told police he thought he was shooting an intruder inside his Willis home, but instead wounded his wife.

The shooting happened around 2:30am Tuesday in the 9000 block of Zapata Drive. When Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies responded, they say they found Sarah Hanel, 27, in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Her husband, Justin Hanel, 25, told deputies he had woken up in the middle of the night and thought he heard an intruder. That's when he said he noticed a figure walking towards him, so he fired a handgun several times.

It was after the shooting, he told police, that he realized the figure walking towards him was his wife.

"Right after he fired, he heard his wife say, 'You shot me,' and he realized in fact that he had shot his own wife," said Lt. Dan Norris with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. "He immediately applied first aid and called for assistance."

Sarah Hanel was transported via Life Flight to Hermann Hospital and is listed as stable.

Justin Hanel was not arrested. Investigators say this looks like it was a tragic accident. The case will be forwarded to the district attorney's office for review.

We leave night lights and 9 watt CFL bulbs (or the newer LED replacements) on throughout the house; except where the dog sleeps. We keep flashlights and LED lanterns in our bedroom.

This guy used poor judgment. Heck, when I get up in the middle of the night the first thing I do is look to see if my wife is in the bed. Otherwise two bleary eyed folk are going to be bumping into each other as one leaves the restroom and the other stumbles toward it.

Obviously this guy didn't look to see where his wife was before heading out after "big game." Can't say I believe his story.

A woman some years back shot her husband, she said she thought he was in bed next to her (HUH? did ya look ? ).... and shot him after he got up, went to the restroom, and walked back into the bedroom to go back to bed.

    She was never charged.

Watch out guys... !!! Don't go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

    Yep.

I bet he had tritium night sights on his gun though, that worked excellent. :\

Identify your target and it's actions/intent _BEFORE_ toggling the cannot undo this button on ones HD/SD firearm.
Having a flashlight at hand is critical. Critical!

Also some people when distrubed from their sleep will wake up in a near fugue state. They are not thinking fully on all 8 cylinders, and will act/react abruptly and even without reason.
Yet another reason to keep a flashlight at hand in addition to if not in lieu of quick access to ones firearm, which may have night sights installed as well.

This is why hubby and I have a code - if he ever comes home in the middle of the night (and I'm already asleep), he is to shout "DON'T SHOOT" before entering the front door of the house, before coming up the stairs, and before opening the bedroom door.

    Hopefully, I'll recognize his voice.

If the reported facts are true ...
... he had woken up in the middle of the night and thought he heard an intruder. That's when he said he noticed a figure walking towards him, so he fired a handgun several times.
That's a perfect recipe to kill your own flock, when living with others. Blind foolishness does nobody any good, particularly when no threatening behavior exists.
