Crybaby robber gets 'knuckle sandwich' from Subway worker

12:34 PM CDT on Thursday, July 23, 2009

By Jeff McShan / 11 News

HOUSTON – Police say a man walked into the Subway sandwich shop on West Little York and tried to rob it. But instead of getting the cash, the woman behind the counter served him a "knuckle sandwich." “When the register opened, he lunged over and grabbed it. My initial response was to hit him. So I hit him,” Subway employee Yava Matthews said.

Police say Tracy Armstead, 29, attempted to rob the sandwich shop on Monday night. When Matthews hit him, he fell back into the wall, but he still had the cash drawer in his hands. “When he proceeded to run towards the front door, I jumped over the counter and then jumped on him,” Matthews said.

She says they ended up outside, but the fight was not over. “We were out here tussling, tussling and tussling. A lot of people were standing around and I told them to give me something. Somebody brought me some handcuffs, so I got him and I handcuffed him,” Matthews said.

Then someone handed her a Taser.

“I got the Taser in my hand and I am Tasing him and he says, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.’ I said, ‘If you can talk to me, you can breathe. So be quiet before I Taser you again,’” Matthews said.

She says that Armstead, who is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 235 pounds, began to cry.

    Seconds later, the police arrived.

“There were about 15 police cars and I was so excited to see them. When they came, they told me that I could get up now, and I said, ‘Are you sure? Are you positive about that?’” said Matthews.

Police are calling her a hero, but her customers are calling her Rambo.

Sounds like Tracy is going to be on 'vacation' for a long time. He'll have fun telling his roommates how he got beat up by a little sandwich lady...

First someone gave her handcuffs, then a tazer? DAMN! That's a tough crowd right there. I wonder what would have been given to her next? Knuckle dusters? Blackjack? ASP?

That dood was probably relieved to see the cops finally show up!

I watched the video and fully expected to see some 200 lb. gal but she's not very big at all. Just visualizing her on top of him, beating his butt and tazing him makes my day.

I'd like to know what bystanders were standing around watching this lady do her thing to the large man and didn't intervene themselves....while having a set of handcuffs.....and another (or possibly same person having a taser?!?!?!?!?

why in the heck didn't the person get the taser out and use it on their own accord rather than waiting for a lady obviously in a fight with a robber ask for someone to hand her something?

why didn't the person with the cuffs come in and help pounce on the guy themselves and begin cuffing themselves?!?!?!?!?

    this doesn't computer with me

but good job on her part, just wish the others would have been more forceful themselves, maybe we'll get more details about the hesitant onlookers at some point
if you carry a taser, then by gum be prepared to use it on a dang low-life scumbag robber

oh, forgot to add.....I'm also waiting to her from some defense attorney or some 'rights' group with their shorts in a wad that she handcuffed him, then tased him and it was unnecessary use of force/detention/something else.....wait for it

Seems to me that she had a pretty good handle on it. If I were one of the bystanders I would be laughing, and I'd gladly lend her any of my stuff to finish what she started.
