    Indiana Motor Vehicles

Identity theft protection moves another step forward by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (IBMV) as they join 20 other states in deploying face recognition technology. When a citizen renews a license or applies for a new one, their photo is taken and enrolled into the system. That photo is run against existing images in a database of approximately 6.5 million license holders. Using algorithms, the system produces a score that indicates if there could be a match with any of the existing photos. The technology sees the permanent facial features of points of measure, such as the distance between the eyes or between the peaks of the cheekbone. A computer program identifies the uniqueness of each image. Any score above a certain threshold is reviewed daily, meaning that about 500 are reviewed, about 5%. Most similarities are found to be due to the data being entered wrong. Any suspicious cases are handled by an investigation unit-usually 2 to 3%. The IBMV started issuing digitally produced drivers licenses with bar codes and holograms in 2007.
