Vernal woman credited for saving boy from kidnapper
August 10, 2009
VERNAL -- Authorities are crediting an alert driver in Vernal for foiling the attempted kidnapping of an 8-year-old boy. Shalyn Searle says she never thought twice about stopping to help the boy.
"He was screaming out, ‘Help me! Help me!' I could hear him from in my car with the windows rolled up," Searle said.
Kid Canal, where boy was fishing
She was on her way home Sunday morning when she saw a man, later identified as 22-year-old Joseph Yump, grabbing a little boy who was fishing at Kid's Canal.
"He was kicking and screaming. The guy had him by the wrists and up here on the arm," Searle explained. "He lifted him up off the ground."
Searle pulled over, called 911 and got out of her car. Once the suspect knew someone was watching him, he let go of the boy and continued to go north on 1500 West. Minutes later, he was arrested a few blocks away at 500 North.
Searle says she was just concerned about the boy, who was visibly shaken up.
"The little boy told me, ‘I tried to jump in the water to get away," Searle said. "I was like, ‘You don't know him at all?' He said, ‘No.' Then he said to me that, you know, 'He said he wasn't going to kill me.'"
Searle has a concealed weapons permit and a gun in her car. She can't believe she was put in a situation where she thought about using it.
"It's something I'll never forget, that little boy's face," she said. "You see stuff like that on TV and you don't think it can happen to you. And I'm sure people don't think it can happen to their children."
The Uintah County Sheriff's Office says Yump is known around town for his strange behavior, but he has never done anything like this before.
Searle says it didn't surprise her that the boy was without a parent, because Vernal is seen as a small, safe town.

Stayed in view, called the cavalry (911) and remained a good witness. The crime was stopped, the suspect was caught, and the potential victim was okay.
It is hard to claim that "doing nothing" is what the good sam did. Pretty effective, that "doing nothing." It has its place.

Nice job on the part of Ms. Searle, she did the right thing and Mr. Yump's criminal career was halted.
Perhaps Mr. Yump will soon have someone grabbing HIS wrists in the near future.

This is one very lucky little boy.
Thank God that Ms. Searle was in the right place ~ at the right time ~ and had the guts to stop the scum bag.

Ms. Searle was very well-spoken, to boot... I LOVE IT when ordinary people step in to do what's right. It helps restore a little bit of faith in the human race.

I couldn't agree more!
Very happy ending... Authorities said the man always acted strangely but had never done anything like that before. (That we know of.)
Who really knows if he's done something like this before or not.

A Siberian Husky ... kept taking off on my son, and I ended up taking the dog as I had a better situation. I loved the dog (Timber). He got out one day and my daughter called me that "he's out". So, I head home quickly to look for him (small town). I might point out, the dog LOVES my granddaughter.... and is protective of her.
Daughter calls me back , says police had called her and had the dog and she would call me when she got there.
The next call... was kind of surreal. She said ... uh, you are NOT going to believe this. Some girl is here, her family, and all types of Police. I'm thinking... uh oh.... and then she tells me the girl's story she was telling the Police.
A guy pulled up in a car, stopped, jumped out and grabbed her... as she was screaming, he was forcibly dragging her to his car. She did not know who he was. The dog hearing the screams, jumped out from the bushes he was behind near a house and hit on a dead run.... jumping and hitting the guy in the middle of the chest and knocking him down. He lost his grip on the girl.
The guy kept trying to grab the girl again, and the Siberian (Timber) had put himself in between the guy and the girl and was not letting him get anywhere near that girl. Finally.... the dog chunked into the calf of his leg and the guy was yelling and screaming as he made his way to his car (dog still clamped down on his leg), getting in his car (without dog) and racing off.
The girl took a hold of the dog's collar and kept him with her as she hurried to the nearest place to call 911 and get help. Her little brother... just kept thanking my daughter over and over .... for "her dog saving his sister's life".
When I got there... my daughter couldn't talk... she was totally in tears.
Timber, the Siberian, got hamburger and steak for awhile. He knew he had done good.
