Janq, I love this quote! It's priceless.

Perhaps there is hope for Wisconsin with this event. Maybe they will see the light and begin to allow CCW permits.

I think this falls under the "Doctrine of competing harms."

Yes, it's illegal to carry a weapon concealed, but that is less harmful to self than being wounded or killed by the badguys. All in all, a good ending.

But the victim also had a gun. He shot and killed one suspect, 17-year-old Kevin Ollie. Ollie's gun also went off, and he accidentally shot the other teen robber before he died.
The proper result: criminals are toes-up in the morgue, with the citizen still standing.

The robbery victim's family says he had no choice but to fight back.
One would think this is common sense.

Wisconsin is a no-CCL state, although there is no law against open carrying so technically one could open carry legally.

Exactly what Ayoob pointed out in the Bernie Goetz "Subway Vigilante" case in NYC. Now he had a lot to overcome because he fled the scene and inflammatory statements he made on tape, but had he have hired a decent lawyer, instead of a mob lawyer who worked for John Gotti, he may have beat the gun charge by arguing "Doctrine of Competing Harms!" Especially since he had been mugged several times before and had attempted to legally obtain a lawful ccw permit, which of course, had been repeatedly denied. Which could have been brought into evidence.

IIRC, he was acquitted of the shooting charge and was deemed self defense but was gigged on the illegal weapon charge. Which opened up the civil liability suit which piled on later.

According to a statement Goetz made in 2004, he has never paid a penny of the civil judgment against him.

He filed for bankruptcy after the trials were over, rightfully claiming that his legal expenses had left him broke.

I can't say as I blame him. He took a lot of hard and unnecessary hits for his actions. A prime example of a decent guy who made several poor choices in the aftermath of a horrendous event!

I don't see anything in the story where he was carrying concealed. Open carry is legal in Wisconsin according to their A.G.

Even in liberal states like Wisconsin, I believe more politicians are starting to see the light in regard to armed self-defense.

Not that they're in favor of people protecting themselves, but just the fact that even in the liberal democrat controlled big cities, people are fed up with violent crime.

In the old days when there wasn't such an enormous crime problem, they could get away with crucifying the victim for protecting himself. But with the enormous surge in crime over the last few decades, public opinion has shifted in favor of crime victims, because people have just had enough.

Which is certainly a good thing.
