Bad:Former Olympian Shot to Death Outside Home
OXNARD, Calif. — Police say former Olympic shot putter Dave Laut has been shot to death outside his Southern California home.
Police officials said the 1984 Olympic bronze medalist and Hueneme High School athletic director was shot multiple times around midnight Thursday.
Sgt. Ron Whitney said the 52-year-old was at home when he and his wife heard noises in the backyard and he went outside to investigate. Shots were fired moments later, and Laut died at the scene.
Whitney says there have been no arrests and police have no suspects.
Sad.

It’s a rather natural instinct to investigate when we hear unfamiliar noises in and around the home. Having a dog and a gun does help albeit limitations. I have heard strange noises out back and I wait. I’ll then flip the lights and view out from an unsuspecting window. In the twenty-five years of living in the same boring-ass house, I have caught one Peeping Tom neighbor whom was aggressively approached by my loyal 90lb dog “Lucy”. Back then, I was married to a pretty hot looking' wife. Ahh, those were the days...

Yup. Am assuming he took few (or zero) precautions. Though that's an assumption, the result is a strong indicator that it's probably accurate. And thus, this might well be another example of how doing things blindly can get you killed ... even at your own house.
In other words ...
Buff ain't enough. Not when criminals would just as soon take everything you've got and piss on your grave.
Condolences to his family and friends.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.

Exactly.
I don't know what happened in this instance, but sometimes the buff guys will throw caution to the wind because they place high value on their strength and aggression abilities.
Those might work against some lesser foes, but if buff guy comes upon a wild dog who ain't playin' the intimidation game, buffy may get planted before he even realizes he's been outmatched.
If one relies on great physical strength too much, it can be a detriment instead of an asset.
