Roger Stephens Charged With Felony Cruelty To Children

    POSTED: 9:26 am EDT September 2, 2009
    UPDATED: 9:50 am EDT September 2, 2009

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A Wal-Mart shopper who became so angry about a crying child that he allegedly slapped the girl in the face is due in court Wednesday.

Investigators said the incident happened Monday at the Stone Mountain store on Rockbridge Road.

A police report said the man, Roger Stephens, 61, of Stone Mountain, had warned the child’s mother, Sonya Mathews, that if she didn’t quiet down the child, he would do it for her.

According to the report, after the mother failed to quiet the girl, Stephens came up to them and slapped the child several times in the face.

The report then quotes Stephens as saying, “See, I told you I would shut her up.”

Mathews then screamed at Stephens and called for security, the report said. Stephens was stopped by another shopper, according to the report.

The girl, identified in the report as Paige Mathews, 2, was not injured, but did suffer some redness in the face. She was treated at the scene and released, the report said.

Stephens was charged with cruelty with children in the first degree, which is a felony.
This could have just as easily gone much worse. Stay safe out there folks.

This guy had such anger in him that he slapped a child he didn't even know. He should be thrown in jail for a long time. He really has a problem.

A simple "tootsie-pop" would have kept him out of the clink. I would have given one to the kid on Walmarts nickle.

Hmm, I wonder how much flack I’ll catch from this… Ok, I can’t resist: I would never touch someone else’s child in this manner, although I have sure felt like it! I recall dating this really, really nice gal, but her children were soOoo poorly behaved that I lost respect for her, so that relationship became history.

WOW.. Must have been something in the air on Monday... I was shopping with my kids at Walmart Monday night and there was a child (about 2) that was throwing a MAJOR fit for like 20 minutes,. You could hear her all over the store, and the parents was just walking around like nothing was happening.. Now I'm a very patient person, I have two of own, but I was getting PO'ed by the parents not dealing with it,.. Even my kids was like "Why don't they spank her?".... LOL

BUT!!!!.... Ya,.. Someone doing that to my child,.... Not happening with me there for sure..

Saber - I hear ya on that,. I've done that a few times myself,.. . No flack here..

First of all if somebody tells me if I don't quiet a 2 yr old they will I'm gonna let them know in no uncertain terms that if they think I'm gonna let em they will be sadly mistaken. On the other hand I agree, when we acted up we were told if we didn't straighten up we would get a whooping as soon as we got home
