Pa. man fires cannon, hits neighbor's house
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania history buff who recreates firearms from old wars accidentally fired a 2-pound cannonball through the wall of his neighbor's home.
Fifty-four-year-old William Maser fired a cannonball Wednesday evening outside his home in Georges Township that ricocheted and hit a house 400 yards away.
The cannonball, about two inches in diameter, smashed through a window and a wall before landing in a closet. Authorities say nobody was hurt.
State police charged Maser with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
No one answered the phone Friday at Maser's home. He tells WPXI-TV recreating 19th century cannons is a longtime hobby. He says he is sorry and he will stop shooting them on his property, about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
This HAS to be one of us.

is an understatement!
I have a friend who built a breech loading black powder cannon that shoots billiard balls! That cannon is a work of art! Looks like a modern day artillery piece!
Shoots a damn pool ball clean through a '70's vintage Jeep Grand Wagoneer!
I would not recommend standing in it's path!

Note to self: be extra careful while cleaning the cannons.

Is that a USA Today misstatement, do you think, or could a 2LB ball ricochet a quarter mile?
Hm. Dixie Gun Works, eh?

I'm betting the AP writer just worded it poorly.
The cannonball probably skimmed off a tree or something in the yard of the house 400 yards away.
Basic English skills in this country aren't what they were 50 years ago.
"I've run across shooting after shooting where the defender shot a violent aggressor with a .380 and did little to immediately stop his depredations. A good hollow point load in 9mm or .38 Special will, historically, end lethal assaults more quickly."

I don't see why he was charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct if it was accidental?
