GOOD: Hack Gets It Done - Charlotte, NC

News-Talk 1110 WBT | News Story: Cab driver strikes back, kills would-be robber

A deadly showdown played out late Sunday in the front seat of a taxi.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a would-be robber, identified as 17-year-old Renaldo Smith, was shot dead by his would-be victim - a cab driver who was called to an apartment complex near Carowinds.

Police said as the cab left the Colonial Village apartments off John Price Road in southwest Mecklenburg, Smith pulled a gun on the driver.

Within seconds, the driver drew his gun and shot Smith, who was dead by the time police arrived.

Police did not immediately identify the cab driver. The cab belonged to Professional Cabs of Charlotte. An employee of the company told WBT NEWS this morning he did not know the driver's identity.

The District Attorney's office must now decide whether to pursue charges against the driver. It's legal under North Carolina law to shoot and kill someone in self-defense.

Arrest records show one previous arrest for Smith - a felony breaking and entering charge from Septemer 2008.
    Good on the cabbie.

The cabbie should bill the dead punk's family for the full fare, including the waiting time.

Don't forget remuneration for any and all fares he wound up missing after the altercation and remuneration to the company for the cleaning bill.

Thanks for the post. This happened in my area and I missed it. Now let's see how long it takes for the cabbie to be cleared.

Don't you just love how they always have to throw a line like this in at the end of the article, as if it were somehow strange or unusual that somewhere, some law actually allows people to protect themselves? As if righteous self-defense were not, in fact, the law of the land everywhere???

Sheesh. Good on the cabbie. It's not easy to fight back against a drawn gun, but he obviously managed to get it right.

It's possible the robber thought that just displaying the gun would get him money and that the cab driver noticed said gun wasn't pointed at him during the robbery giving him an opportunity to use his gun

He should not be charged. I drove a cab in NYC for a year and you're pretty vulnerable out there. I hope he doesn't lose his job because his boss is a moron.

Good for the Cabbie. More oxygen for the rest of us to breath in.

I'm going to be traveling through that area on Sept. 12th. just not in a taxi. Will be packin' so if any bad guys (or gals) are reading this, take a warning, I shoot just as well as the taxi driver.
